On October 31, much of America will observe the secular holiday of Halloween. In the United States, consumer spending for this holiday is second only to Christmas. But for Protestants worldwide, October 31 means much more than just Trick-or-Treat or ghost stories.

On this date in 1517, Martin Luther, an Augustinian monk who increasingly found himself at odds with many of the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, posted his 95 Theses (complaints) on the door of the Cathedral of Wittenberg in Germany. This effectively launched the Protestant Reformation. In our church calendar, October 31 is known as Reformation Day and the Sunday before or on this date is known as Reformation Sunday.

October 31 is also known as All Hallows' Eve, as it is the evening before All Hallows' Day (All Saints Day) on November 1.  In the church calendar, the Sunday after or on November 1 is known as  All Saints Sunday, when the church commemorates the faithful that have gone before us.

Hello everyone!

The worship committee has been discussing ways we can follow God's call to incorporate more prayer in both our Sunday worship and beyond.

Starting this Sunday (11/4) we will be adding two prayer stations for anyone looking to have one-on-one prayer after the worship service.  This is an opportunity to pray with someone in a confidential one-on-one setting.

One prayer station will be in the narthex of the sanctuary and the other in the pastor's office.  Anyone who feels the need to pray with someone will have the opportunity to do so at one of these locations.

We are also discussing implementing a new prayer service, where short messages or testimonials will be presented, and corporate prayers for healing will be offered.  The prayer stations will be made available after the prayer service for those wanting one-on-one prayer.  Be on the lookout for this to be offered soon!

Pastor Denise

Anyone interested in sharing their gift of music can contact our Music Director, Grayce Armstrong, at music@debowsumc.org.  Currently, the choir rehearses on Sundays at 10:45am and the band practices on Fridays at 6:00pm.  Please check the church website calendar for any exceptions or changes to this schedule.  The Christmas Cantata will be presented during the 9:30 AM worship service on Sunday, December 16th.  Below is a picture of the Cregle's performing on Revival Sunday, October 28: Zach, Roger, Brianna.

Wednesday Bible Study
11:30 AM

The Wednesday Bible Study meets from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM.  There is an optional prayer time in the sanctuary at 11:15 AM, prior to the bible study.  Pastor Denise is currently leading the Alpha Bible Study. Everyone is welcome and people can join the study at anytime; come one, come all.

DeBows Pathfinders

The DeBows Pathfinders enjoy nature and fellowship by going on hikes and nature walks. Participants normally meet at the church and then carpool to the hiking destination.  Events can be anything from casual nature walks to more challenging hikes.

Past events have included hikes at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, Sourlands Preserves, Allaire State Park, Double Trouble State Park, and  Baldpate Mountain. You can see some pictures from previous hikes by visiting the church website blog. Watch for information concerning the next hike. You may contact Wayne Ervin for more information.

Charlie Zahm
Celtic Christmas Concert

On Saturday, December 8 at 1:30 PM, Charlie Zahm will once again perform in our area, presenting a Celtic Christmas Concert.  It will be held at the First Baptist Church of Allentown (72 Waker Avenue (Rte 526) Upper Freehold Twp).  Charlie is a well-known baritone balladeer and will be joined by talented fiddle player, Tad Marks.  This is a FREE event and a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas season.

UMCOR Hygiene Kits

As recent hurricanes Florence & Michael remind us, natural disasters happen all too often, adversely impacting hundreds of thousands of people at home and abroad.  Our UMCOR Hygiene Kit outreach activity helps to meet the ever increasing demand for relief items.  The hygiene kits we put together are forwarded to UMCOM for deployment to those most in need.  We have collected many items needed to make kits, but still need more of the following items so we can complete the kits and send them to UMCOR.

  • Hand towels
  • Washcloths
  • Nail files or clippers
  • Sets of 6 Band-Aids (standard size)
  • Combs - 6"

We currently have ample supplies of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and bars of soap; therefore, we do not  need more of these items at the moment.  If you can help with any of the needed items, please leave them in the box outside the Fellowship Hall.

UMCOR is the United Methodist Committee on Relief and is one of the most efficient relief agencies in the world. You may also contact Anita Chichester for more detailed information at 848-373-9304. Thank you for your support.

DeBows will once again participate in the Holiday Gift Drive in support of the Children’s Home Society of Trenton. A list of children, with ages and suggested gift items, will be made available on Sunday, November 4. Tom Hornak is coordinating this outreach activity. If you are participating, please place gifts in in a shopping bag (unwrapped) and bring them to church by Sunday, December 9. They will be delivered to the Children’s Home Society during the following week. They may be the only gifts some of these children will receive this Christmas. This is one way we share the love of Christ during this very special time of year with those less fortunate than ourselves.
Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Marilyn Allerton to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

DeBows is conducting the following fundraising events this fall.  Funds raised during these events will be used to support the ministry programming at DeBows.  Thank you for your support.

Orders Due by Sunday, November 11

On Sunday, November 11th, we will total all submitted Scrip Gift Card order forms and place the bulk order.  All gift card orders must be received by Sunday, November 11th.  The order forms and information are on the table in the foyer outside of Fellowship Hall.  The church receives a percentage of the total sale (actual percentage depends on the specific gift cards ordered per the order form).  All order forms must be submitted with a check made out to "DeBows UMC".  Please give your completed forms and checks to Sue Hayward. Ordered gift cards will be received in time to use for Christmas shopping and/or gifts.  This will be the last bulk Scrip gift card order in 2018.

Ends on November 18
DeBows is currently conducting a Gertrude Hawk Candy fundraiser.  Order forms are located on the tables outside of Fellowship Hall. The final day to return completed order forms will be Sunday, November 18.  Items ordered will be available before Christmas. See Sue Hayward for more information.

Online Shopping Until 1/9/2019
Thank you for supporting the church during our Yankee Candle fundraiser.  For those who would still like to order items, there is an opportunity to order online until 1/9/2019.  DeBows will still receive 40% of the total order amount and additional items are available online. Use the information below to place your orders.  Items ordered will be shipped directly to your home address.

Fellowship Time – this is our weekly time of informal gathering to greet each other and visitors.  During this time, we share conversation and light refreshments.  It is conducted immediately after the Sunday morning worship service.  If you would like to host Fellowship Time on any given week, please see the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall.

Lay Reader or Usher – if you are interested in participating in the worship service as either a Lay Reader or Usher, please speak with Guy Raymond.
