Busy football Saturday? Miss yesterday's D1.ticker? Here you go.
ESPN NBA insider Wojnarowski reports on more developments between the NBA & NBPA that are impacting the current one-and-done rule. The league wants medical records to be provided on every prospect, as well as mandatory attendance and "some level of participation" at the pre-Draft combine. So far it seems the NBPA has balked at both. A number of agents comment that medical information is one of their key points of leverage with teams. A change come 2022 is still a possibility as sides will continue to negotiate. (link)
"It’s probably similar to the arms race for facilities because schools are trying to compete at the highest level. When one staff adds somebody, the next one will try to do it as well. Over the last two or three years, there’s certainly been an increase in staff." That's Baylor AD Rhoades on the growth of FB staffs as AFCA Executive Director & former Louisiana Monroe HC Berry points to a study that found one FBS program had 107 employees. Oklahoma State boss Gundy points to the open-ended definition of an "analyst" or "quality control coach," which has created a loophole in the system. Baylor's Rhule notes the need for staff that can handle all the software within a program, "Some people can pay a quality control coach $150,000 and get a former head coach or a former coordinator. It depends on the philosophy and money. To do an elite job you have to have a lot of people because there’s a lot of man hours involved in what we do nowadays compared to maybe even when I first got into coaching." (link)
San Jose Mercury News' Wilner wonders if Washington State FB HC Leach will get fined now that his sharply-worded text messages sent to Pac-12 officials have hit the wire. Wilner asked the league yesterday, but did not receive a response. Talking it out, "Considering the situation … that Leach took the private path to voice frustration … that the conference admitted its review process was flawed in the WSU-USC game … that Scott already spoke publicly about the officiating … it’s difficult to imagine that Leach would get fined for his text messages going public. Difficult, but not impossible." (link)
Yahoo's Thamel with 10 thoughts on yesterday's FB action, including drama in the Big Ten, what he describes as a "dead week" next weekend with few top-ranked matchups, questions at USC where HC Helton's buyout is believed to be $15M+ & more. (link); USA Today's Wolken with his version, asks if Purdue's win over Ohio State will pressure Louisville into making a move to hometown hero & current Boilermakers HC Brohm, Army has won a game in each of the past two Octobers by stopping a last-second two-point conversion try, Florida Atlantic's slip, lots more. The ESPN College GameDay scene in Pullman was nothing short of awesome. What an early morning party. (link, link); Next week for GameDay: Jacksonville for the annual Florida-Georgia affair. (link)

Louisville AD Tyra has already commented on his view of Cardinals FB at the moment, but what I found interesting in this piece is Tyra saying he watches every FB game again on Sunday mornings to get perspectives he missed from being on-site. On Athletic Association board member Meeker's comments a couple of weeks back that U of L doesn't have the money to make a FB move, "Tom and I discussed his comment. My guess is he’d like to retract that in the sense that we really haven’t discussed that at the board level. [...] We ended last year with a slight surplus. While the settlements have taken a ding out our funds, we try to be thoughtful and make the right financial decisions. Tom and I had not had a discussion prior to that. That was his own assertion." (link); Long Facebook post by the daughter of Cards FB HC Petrino on the difficulties of a football family during a tough season, "However, I am just in shock at how quickly it seems everyone has turned against us. I’ve really been struggling with it." More. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz runs down the HC bonus monies earned yesterday: San Diego State's Long up to $135K now that the Aztecs are bowl eligible, Fresno's Tedford up to $200K, Washington State's Leach at $75K thanks to his sixth win of the year, the same feat for UAB's Clark equals $25K with an equal amount for the Blazers if they end up bowling, Utah State's Wells gets $50K, Kentucky's Stoops the same. More. (link)
New Prairie View A&M AD Washington announces the promotion of Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Pete to the Asst. Vice President line & the move of AVP of Auxiliary Services Addison to AVP for Business Operations. From the release, "Pete will oversee all functional operations to include but not limited to game day operations, athletic compliance, and academics and will directly support fourteen of the eighteen sports." (link)
A number of LIU Post (DII) student-athletes are concerned about their spots as a merger with LIU Brooklyn looms after the current academic year. MBB student-athlete Kunkel: "They dropped a bomb on us. Nobody saw this coming." Volleyball & Softball student-athletes point to uniform alterations to express their frustrations. The institutions have guaranteed scholarship awards for the 2019-20 campaign even in the event some student-athletes don't make the combined teams come next year. There's also the challenge of travel if current Post student-athletes have to get to Brooklyn daily for practices, games, etc. (link)
Cultural brokerage: The act of facilitating interactions across parties from different cultural backgrounds. According to studies conducted by INSEAD assistant professor Jang, cultural brokerage is the most important element of delivering better outcomes on teams with diverse members. Jang: "...this research suggests that it is not enough to simply bring together people from different cultures and expect them to produce creative outcomes. For teams to unleash their full creative potential, it is critical to have at least one multicultural insider or outsider in the group. […] ...being a broker requires substantial cognitive and emotional effort. Because of this, effective cultural brokerage is more likely to emerge in teams with a high level of psychological safety. It also requires active participation and buy-in from the team as a whole." (link)

Newish Kennesaw State Prez Whitten not shy about her desire for football and the rest of the athletic department to win: "I think we’re in a good place. We are in a conference where there is a challenge. Certainly, our goal is to dominate the conference. With a continued record of dominance, other opportunities will follow." AD Overton notes her frequent presence at practices and sporting events and Whitten describes herself as a "professional spectator." On her time as Vice Chair of the board of the Georgia Athletic Association: "(I learned about) the need for raising external funds for athletics and how and where you pursue those areas, and a second area would be opportunities to understand facilities, how they are used and how to optimize them for the students across all sports. It also gave me the exposure to multiple sports. I know everyone’s first thought is usually about football, but there are a number of other sports where the athletes have worked just as hard their entire lives, are just as competitive and hungry." More, including her visits to the student section and love of throwing free hot dogs to the crowd. (link)
In the past six years, University of Arizona police have investigated 16 student-athletes and athletic department employees for sexual assault or dating violence. The data was revealed in court via a document from the school's attorney, submitted in the discovery process of one of the two federal Title IX lawsuits filed against the school regarding former FB student-athlete Bradford. The Arizona Daily Star's Schmidt and Saal: "The victim’s attorneys previously claimed there is a culture of violence within the UA football program, but now say they have reason to believe 'that culture of violence may be broader' and span across multiple sports. They have also asked for access to the accusers’ identities to determine whether the investigations were accurately completed, saying that they have concerns that the school may have been giving preferential treatment to student-athletes 'or otherwise not responding the way that it should under Title IX.'" Despite his lawyer's attempts to dismiss him from the first federal suit in August, former Wildcats HC Rodriguez remains a defendant in the case. (link)
Collegiate hockey is becoming a key path to leading an NHL squad as nine of the current 31 HCs are former student-athletes. Twelve of the NHL's 31 GMs also have ties to the college game. Further, around 300 former student-athletes are employed around the league. Vegas Golden Knights GM McPhee: "Every pro team started looking earnestly at college players. And then it was only a matter of time before they started looking to colleges for management, coaches and scouts." College Hockey Inc.'s Exec. Dir. Snee: "What has changed now is the perception is much more in line with the reality." (link)
Also Noticed: Safe to say the Michigan-Michigan State game yesterday drew out some ugly from both sides. Video circulated yesterday of a Michigan student-athlete defacing the Spartan logo midfield before the game. Wolverines HC Harbaugh said post game: "Apparently they clotheslined two of our guys and came out in their helmets. Lawrence Marshall, they just went up and clotheslined him. One of the guys ripped off LaVert Hill’s headphones. Total bush league, and apparently coach Dantonio was five yards behind it all smiling. I think it’s bush league. That’s my impression of it." (link); New Mexico is on pace for its lowest average attendance in 30 years. The Lobos are averaging 17,908 fans this season, the first sub-20K mark since 1992. (link); The Athletic's Deitsch notes ESPN's Herbstreit criticized Ohio State last night, but didn't mention HC Meyer much, which Deitsch calls a "protection attitude" around HCs. ESPN EVP of Programming & Scheduling Magnus writes back to Deitsch on Twitter, "I mean this not as a criticism but as a suggestion. You should really spend the time to completely understand college sports and media from a 360 degree perspecive. Top to bottom...Power 5 to D3.  You might be surprised by what you discover.  It will take time...so be prepared." (link); Here's next weekend's full FB TV schedule. (link); The ending of last night's Western Kentucky-Old Dominion game won't be replicated anytime soon. Multiple untimed downs after a missed field goal return & somehow the Monarchs won. (link); The GoFundMe campaign to help Florida State FB student-athlete Robinson and his family rebuild their Panama City home that was destroyed by Hurricane Michael has surpassed its $75K goal. Currently at $104,582. (link)
