A Weekly List of Advocacy Items

Protection of Civil Liberties
1. A caravan of thousands of Hondurans are traveling north to escape violence and seek asylum in the U.S.  The Administration is considering action against the caravan and the countries through which they travel, targeting immigrants and children. Considerations include deploying the US military to close the southern border with Mexico. The President threatened to cut off millions of dollars in aid to Honduras saying he was “stopping all payments to these countries, which seem to have almost no control over their population.”

Contact Senators Isakson and Perdue and Congressman Bishop or Scott with the suggested script: My name is (---) and I’m from (---). I’m calling to express my concern about the President’s threats to close our southern border.
Under US and International law, people have the right to seek asylum and present themselves at our border for that purpose. I am calling to request Senator (or Congressman) _____________ voice his support in favor of  the ability of people in danger to continue to have that recourse.

2. In previous weeks, the Violence Against Women Act was on Lynn’s List. At that time, Congress extended the Act to avoid a government shutdown. The Act is now set to expire on December 7th.
Contact Senators Isakson and Perdue and Congressman Bishop or Scott with the suggested script:   My name is (---) and I’m from (---).  The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) funding was extended only until December 7th. The Act funds social service agencies aiding victims affected by sexual violence, such as rape crisis centers, shelters and legal-assistance programs and has set up important reporting mechanisms surrounding campus dating violence extending protections for the LGBT community. Congress must find a permanent solution to fund VAWA.

The following action is for public comments on a rule change that is being proposed. If you don’t like making phone calls, this is certainly something you can do!!!
1. The Flores Agreement has previously been on Lynn’s List. The proposed rule change has been posted and the comment period is open. The Flores settlement is the result of a 1997 court case. It requires the government to release children from immigration detention -- without unnecessary delay (no longer than 20 days) -- to their parents, other adult relatives or licensed programs. It also requires immigration officials to give detained minors a certain quality of life, including things such as food, drinking water, medical assistance in emergencies, toilets, sinks, temperature control, supervision and as much separation from unrelated adults as possible. The rule change seeks to allow indefinite detention.  Please do not just copy and paste the suggested scripts. Personalize them in some form.

  • I oppose the government’s proposal to end the Flores Agreement.  I value the dignity and well-being of all people, especially vulnerable migrant children in U.S. government custody.
  • I oppose the government’s proposal to end the Flores Agreement. Detaining people is expensive and wasteful. I do not want my tax dollar to fund indefinite detention, fewer legal protections and unregulated custody of minors.
  • I oppose the government’s proposal to end the Flores Agreement.  I want the Agreement upheld to reduce and limit the detention of children.  My tax dollars can be better spent than on privately owned and operated jails for children.

Protection of the Environment
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published its regulation rollback related to methane gas and opened it for the required public comment period. The changes are predicted to create a powerful greenhouse gas with up to 36 times more warming potential than carbon dioxide. The agency’s own analysis found the proposed rules could pump hundreds of thousands more tons of the climate-warming gas into the atmosphere and add millions of dollars in agricultural, health-care and other costs to the U.S. economy because of climate change. The potential changes would decrease the frequency of leak inspections from twice a year to once per year and eliminate a requirement that vent systems be certified by professional engineers.  To comment on the proposed rule, click on the link below and then clink on the green “submit a formal comment” box.  Some suggested scripts are listed below.  Edit them to personalize them. Please do not just copy and paste the scripts. Personalize them in some form.

  • I oppose a move to gut the EPA’s methane pollution standards. At a time when the science indicates the methane problem is much greater than previously understood, the rule proposal moves protections in the wrong direction. Recent scientific studies by the United Nations Intergovernmental Scientific Panel paints a dire picture of  the immediate consequences of climate change. The world’s leading climate scientists have warned there are only a dozen years for global warming to be kept to a tipping point of 1.5o C. Beyond that point, even half a degree will significantly worsen the risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people.
  • I oppose a move to gut the EPA’s methane pollution standards. Scientists have determined that every additional pound of the planet-warming gas contributes to extreme weather events, crop loss, lower labor productivity and other effects of climate change. The EPA agrees that reducing methane is a highly effective way to reduce the rate of climate change and it’s also one of the cheapest and easiest things we can do to reduce climate pollution.
  • I oppose a move to gut the EPA’s methane pollution standards. Rather than weakening these critical protections, we need the EPA to strengthen methane pollution safeguards. Americans depend on the EPA to protect us from the harmful pollution that makes it harder to breathe –- and corporate polluters who profit from it. We need the EPA to fulfill its mission to “protect human health and the environment” by not letting corporate polluters play fast and loose with our children's health.
  • I oppose a move to gut the EPA’s methane pollution standards. It is the EPA’s obligation to protect all Americans from harmful methane pollution. Any attempt to weaken or dismantle standards that cut pollution from the oil and gas industry is a direct assault on our health and environment -– and the Environmental Protection Agency should not be complicit.
