Join us this Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Worship Service
at 10:30 am

Pastor: Rev. Jessica Margrave Schirm
Sermon: What is it You Want Me to do for You? The Remix
Psalm 126; Mark 10:46-52
Stewardship Testimony
In her book, The Soul of Money, Lynne Twist offers this reflection, “Once we began to align our money decisions with these deeper core values and our highest commitments, we experienced a dramatic shift, not only in what we did with our money but also in how we felt about money, about our life and about ourselves. Eventually, we came to know ourselves not for what we had or owned, but for what we gave; not for what we accumulated, but for what we allocated.” How has this been true for you? In November we will be thinking deeply about money - especially money that we invest in the life, mission and vision of Grinnell UCC. Why do you give to our church? How does your family determine the amount you give in tithes and offerings? How has your giving been an act of faithfulness? What programs or ministries are you particularly passionate about supporting? We’d love to hear your story! Every Sunday in November we will hear a brief 2-3 minute personal testimony during worship and each bulletin will include an insert sharing additional giving stories. If you are willing to share your story - spoken or written - contact Pastor Jessica by October 28th.
Newsletter Deadline
Please have submissions for the November Newsletter to elizabeth@grinnellucc.org by 3:30pm this Sunday, October 28.
Grinnell UCC Membership
Has our extravagant welcome made you feel at home here at Grinnell UCC? Pastor Jessica invites anyone who would like to learn more about church membership to join her for coffee, donuts and conversation before church on Sunday, November 11. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of Grinnell UCC, please plan to meet downstairs in Friendship Hall at 9:15 on November 11th.
World Community Day
Church Women United are hosting a celebration of World Community Day this Friday, November 2, at noon. The event will be at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, 916 5th Avenue, and will feature speaker Harold Kasimow, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies at Grinnell College. Lunch will be served following the service.
Reading for Children
Our UCC Community Preschool would love to have church members come in and read to our preschool children. Please email Preschool Director Kelli Johnson at uccprek@gmail.com to set up a time when you are available to visit.
Change Clocks November 4
Daylight Savings ends at 2am on Sunday, November 4. Here's a friendly reminder to turn your clocks back or you will be an hour early to church.
MICA Food Pantry
It is never too late to drop off a donation for Grinnell's local food pantry. We have a grocery cart in our narthex designated for items that will benefit low-income residents. Bring non-perishable food, hygiene & cleaning products, diapers, etc to church on Sunday, and let's fill the cart!
Take Away Hunger
Our next TAH packaging event is November 4 from 2:15 - 3:15pm at the Elks Lodge.  We would like to have two teams of 12 packagers – that’s 24 people from our church who commit to one hour on a Sunday afternoon. The need for this non-perishable packaged food is great, as hurricanes have wreaked havoc on our coasts, including Puerto Rico.

The TAH Board has had to increase the cost for participation because the program has not been breaking even with the cost of food, supplies and shipping. The cost for a 12-member team will be $384.  Each packager is asked to donate $32 (up from $30). Others who cannot pack but wish to support Take Away Hunger may also donate; these additional donations will be used to pay for youth to participate for free.  This program is eligible for volunteer points for any high school student –bring your volunteer form to have it signed.

Please consider joining us on November 4. You will find sign-up sheets in the church parlor.  You may make checks payable to Grinnell UCC with Take Away Hunger on the memo line. Many thanks to those individuals who participated at one or more packaging event in the past. Your helping hands have served a great need.

Neighbors in Need Offering Grinnell UCC has raised $2,496 for Neighbors in Need (NIN) helping to support the UCC’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. If you would like to make a gift, envelopes are available in the narthex, or simply write a check to Grinnell UCC with NIN in the memo line.
Congregational Meeting after Worship this Sunday
A called meeting of the congregation will immediately follow worship this Sunday. Items of business are to approve the 2019 budget and to adopt a corporate resolution (a statement sometimes required to transfer shares of stock to the church). The meeting will be held in the sanctuary following worship; refreshments will be available. Childcare will be provided during the meeting--please have children go to the nursery (instead of the parlor) for snacks.
Care for Creation News
Did you know that one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year?  You can make a difference by remembering to always bring a reusable bag when you shop.  Did you know that nearly one million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute? Go refillable! Remember to carry your own reusable bottles.

Hallelujah! We have met our goals to purchase additional Godly Play stories and to buy new books for our children & youth! THANK YOU generous donors for making this possible.
