Sunday Gospel Connection
(Mark 10:17-30 - A man with many possessions asks Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life.)

Today we continue reading the Gospel of Mark from where we left off last Sunday. Last Sunday our Gospel told how Jesus was tested by the Pharisees about the requirements for divorce. Recall that these chapters come from the second part of Mark’s Gospel, which chronicles the beginning of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem.

In today’s Gospel, an unnamed man approaches Jesus and inquires about what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replies that one must follow the commandments of the Law of Moses. The man acknowledges that he has observed all of these since his childhood. Jesus then says that only one thing is lacking: he must give his possessions to the poor and follow Jesus. The man leaves in sadness, and Mark tells us that this is because he had many possessions.

This Gospel might make us uncomfortable about our possessions. This discomfort offers us an opportunity to consider our possessions and our family’s commitment to the poor. Material possessions are a necessity in our culture. Our use of these possessions and our attitude about their importance is our choice, however. It is a choice we can make with the awareness that our faith in Jesus commits us to show our care for the poor.

September Meeting Minutes
25th Anniversary of the Festival of Trees
Each year the school sponsors 2-3 major fundraisers.  The first is the Festival of Trees.  This takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the event.  The profits from the event allow us to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of education at Saint John School.  In essence, each family receives $200 from the event.  The event is a dinner, auction, and various raffles.  We need each family to take an active role.
This year we need volunteers to:
  • Bake cookies;
  • Donate to class baskets;
  • Volunteer to help at the evening;
  • Sell a table of 10 tickets to the event;
  • Encourage your son/daughter to volunteer;
  • Pitch in wherever you can.
Please go to the links below to volunteer to bake cookies or to volunteer for a duty.  Information on Class Baskets will be coming soon.  This event draws over 400 people and it’s a delightful evening and a wonderful to end the Thanksgiving weekend and kick-off the holiday season.

Thank You In Advance!

Life Saver & 911SafeChild
Saint John has a unique opportunity to offer our families two Life Saving Apps that have evidence of being priceless in an emergency.  One or both of these should be of interest to you and people you know, because having immediate access to a Personal Health Record (PHR) in an emergency could save the life of a loved one when they are unconscious, incoherent, or simply afraid.  Please click on the link below to get all of the information you need:
