Dear Indivisible Friends,

We are truly in the final weeks and days leading up to these incredibly important Midterm Elections.  Understanding many of the issues on both local and national levels can be overwhelming, so later this week you will receive a ballot guide via email from Indivisible SB to help you make informed decisions.

Below are some very important actions to take this week.  In addition to requesting your time and commitment for these actions, we also want to bring to your attention one more request.  We recently had a Call to Action to end gun shows in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria.  MoveOn still needs more names on the petitions, so please take a quick moment to add yours:
  • Petition the Santa Maria Fairpark HERE
  • Petition the Earl Warren Showgrounds HERE
Thank you, as always, for all you do!
ISB Profile: Mike Levin --CA49

Covering the northwest corner of San Diego County and the southern swath of Orange County, Republican Darrell Issa’s old seat is one of the nation’s most closely watched House races. The district went for Hillary Clinton by 7 points. Democratic environmental lawyer Mike Levin and Republican state Board of Equalization member  Diane Harkey, both from Orange County, offer district voters a sharp contrast

With over a decade of experience in the renewable energy industry, Levin is probably the greenest candidate running in California. He co-founded Sustain OC in Orange County and has served for several years on the board of the Center for Sustainable Energy, based in San Diego. For his work in clean energy, he was named to the OC METRO 40 under 40.

Like candidate Katie Hill (CA-25), the results of the 2016 election compelled him to run.  “After seeing that result,” he says, “my wife and I both decided what good is our background, our experience, our education, our relationships, the values that we have, the values that we want to share with our own children, if we don't stand up and try to do something for our country right now?”

On top of championing environmental policies, Levin supports Medicare for All, affordable higher education, gun control, preserving Social Security, a woman’s right to choose, and a $15 federal minimum wage. Levin has endorsements from The San Diego Union-Tribune, President Barack Obama, Senators Dianne Feinstein, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and a raft of progressive organizations.

This race is a crucial win for Democrats. It is now a toss-up.

Turn the Senate BLUE: Support McCaskill and Heitkamp

Democratic Senators Claire McCaskill (MO) and Heidi Heitkamp (ND) both displayed enormous courage when they voted NO on the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. Both senators are in deeply conservative red states and are currently under vicious attack via smear campaigns funded by the GOP and deep pockets on the far right. Sen. Heitkamp, in particular, has dropped several points in the polls against her Republican challenger in next month's election. We need to help these two Democratic senators retain their seats in November. Please volunteer to help their campaigns: donate to Heidi Heitkamp here and donate to Claire McCaskill here.

Flip Two Republican Senate Seats BLUE!

Progressive Democrat and current AZ Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema is polling well against her Republican rival Martha McSally in the battle for the seat being vacated by retiring Republican Senator Jeff Flake. Please volunteer for Rep. Sinema's campaign and make a contribution here.

Progressive Democrat and current NV Congresswoman Jacky Rosen is giving Senator Dean Heller, the current Republican incumbent, a run for his money in NV.  Please also volunteer for Jacky's campaign and make a contribution here.

ISB MIDTERM REMINDERS

Make sure you are registered, and help Get Out The Vote

Closer to home, we have some very important work left to do before the Nov. 6 election.
  • The deadline to register is Oct. 22.  Make sure you and the people you know are registered by checking voter status here. If you’ve moved since the last election, you can re-register online here.
  • If you vote by mail, you should have received your ballot by now.  Fill it out, sign the back of the return envelope, and mail to or drop off at one of the election offices/24 hour drop-off boxes listed below.  More helpful tips here.
            Santa Barbara: 4440-A Calle Real
Santa Maria: 511 E. Lakeside Parkway
Lompoc: 401 E. Cypress Ave., Room 102 (24-hour drop box is at 100 Civic Center Plaza)
  • If you usually vote at your polling place, but you know you’ll be unable to do so on Nov. 6, request a One Time Vote By Mail Application here. Deadline is Oct. 30.
Most importantly, our local candidates need our time, energy and commitment.  Volunteer to participate in the all important GOTV efforts by registering, canvassing, phone banking, postcarding, and talking to voters.  You can use the ISB’s Activist Buddy Network to find a partner to join you in this work, or recruit a friend.  Volunteer here to help out our local candidates.  As Michelle Obama has said “Elections aren't just about who votes but who doesn't vote.”

NO to Gerrymandering in Santa Barbara County: Measures G and H

There are two competing anti-gerrymandering, redistricting measures that Santa Barbara County residents will be voting on in this election.  Measure G2018 will require an 11 person independent commision be appointed to adjust boundaries of the county supervisorial district, and mandates multiple meetings to ensure public input and transparency.  By contrast, Measure H2018 proposes a 5 person commission with a greatly reduced number of public meetings; it is heavily supported by the oil and gas industry. Remember, to ensure that Measure G passes, you must Vote YES on G2018 and Vote NO on Measure H2018.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH

1. Defend Our Right to Protest

The National Park Service has submitted a proposal that would close 80% of the White House sidewalk, put new limits on spontaneous demonstrations, and open the door to charging fees for protesting.  Comment by Monday, October 15  by 9 pm to protest this serious threat to our First Amendment rights. (If you’ve attended a protest in Washington, DC or have organized protests before, talk about your experience and how the right to protest is important to you.)

More Info

Sample Written Script: The National Park Service’s proposed regulations restricting peaceful demonstration near the White House and the National Mall is an attempt to limit our freedom of speech and right to free assembly. Requiring demonstrators to “pay” for the right to protest by imposing fees for putting up barricades or covering the costs of “monitoring” the protest will make a large scale protest (such as the March on Washington where Martin Luther King delivered his iconic “I have a dream” speech or, more recently, the Women’s March) prohibitively expensive. Moreover, I strongly object to the NPS changing the permitting process to eliminate the rule that a protest is deemed granted if not denied in 24 hours. This change will make it nearly impossible to organize spontaneous, large-scale protests in a timely way. These proposed new rules will have an adverse impact on my right to protest and are an unconstitutional attempt to silence my freedom of speech.

IMMIGRATION

2. Protest Inhumane Conditions at Privately Run ICE Facility in San Bernardino

Federal inspectors found multiple nooses fashioned from bedsheets at the Adelanto Detention Center in San Bernardino during a surprise visit following the fatal, self-inflicted hanging of an immigration detainee and several attempted suicides by prisoners. Discovery of the nooses was one of many serious deficiencies at Adelanto, which is owned and operated by Florida-based GEO Group Inc. and houses 1,659 Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees and has 307 contract guards. Nationwide, self-inflicted strangulation accounted for four of every 20 ICE detainee deaths reported from October 2016 to July 2018, according to investigators.

Sample Script: I’m calling [Senator Harris/Feinstein ; Rep Carbajal] from [zip code] to protest the inhumane conditions at Adelanto Detention Center in San Bernardino. I am demanding that Congress conduct an in-depth investigation into the GEO Group’s management of immigration detention facilities, taking into account all deaths at their facilities. I am also urging that you draft and pass legislation prohibiting ICE from contracting with private prison companies.
