Message from the PTA

Hello North Davis Families,

I want to thank you all for joining us for our first Together Tuesday held at NDE last week.  It was amazing to see so many NDE families come out and enjoy the evening together!  I also want to share a big thank you to Michelle Livingston for coordinating treats and volunteers for the National Bike and Walk to School Day last Wednesday.  So many Dolphins make it a point to bike and walk to school everyday, and it is extra fun to show our appreciation and support for your efforts on these national days as well.

Coming up this week is the October PTA Meeting TOMORROW Tuesday, October 16 from 6:30pm-8:00pm in the MPR.  NDE School Counselors Alicia Perry and Maria Cook will be our special presenters this month.  They will be sharing information about what they are teaching our kids in the classroom, as well as providing useful tips and resources for all of us to use at home.  Davis School Board candidates will be coming by toward the end of the meeting to introduce themselves as well, and they will be available for questions and conversations during Open Forum.  FREE Childcare is provided for NDE students, so be sure to register here if you plan to use this service: https://goo.gl/forms/seAkUuIjCsUhOj7u2.

One last note—be sure to save the date for Friday, October 26 for our NDE Sudwerk Dock Party!  A portion of the proceeds from food and drink sales at Sudwerk that evening will be donated to our school.  We hope you can join us on the 26th (5pm-9pm) for a fun evening together with food, games, and live music from Adam Donald who is a talented musician and first grade dad at NDE.  We hope to see you all there!

Thank you everyone, and I wish you all a wonderful week.

Brenna

NURSE'S NOOK

Hello North Davis Families! We have a new district website which is full of excellent information! Here is a link to our district allergy brochure. It has a lot of information about allergy awareness in the classroom.

Thank You 6th Grade Parents!

Thank you very much to all the 6th grade parents and students who helped run the carousel fund-raiser for Walker Creek. A special thanks is due to Marinka Swift who coordinated all the volunteers for the three separate events.

We raised $467.29 - enough money for one full scholarship! Amazing job everyone!

NDE was recently informed that the costs for hiring the school buses for the trip will now be $900 more than previously quoted. As you are filling out your Walker Creek Forms, please do consider donating additionally, if at all possible, to help defray this unforeseen expense.

Walker Creek Information Night is November 1st. Reminders to come.

Fitness Corner

The Kids in Motion Fitness programming offered this year include: Jump Rope Club, T/K and Kindergarten fitness, Primary fitness, Intermediate fitness (including fencing), and 6th grade cross-age mentoring (with 1st grade). This week my focus is on Intermediate Fitness.

The Intermediate (grades 4-6) Fitness programming focuses on skill-based units. These units build directly from the activities students experienced in grades 1-3. Each unit has its own set of lesson plans and equipment. Classroom teachers have access to three units each during Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Teachers coordinate with their grade level as well as work within their own classrooms on the various fitness activities and lessons.

The Fall units include: Overhand throwing (baseball/softball/football), Racquet sports (tennis/badminton) and Fitness testing (mile run, flexibility, abdominal strength/endurance, upper body strength, lower back flexibility/upper back strength).

Beginning in December, units will rotate and students will work on Blacktop ball games (dodgeball, handball, 4-square), Basketball and Frisbee skills. During Spring, students build their skills in Volleyball, Kicking/Trapping (soccer), as well as Track and Field.

Additionally, our fourth through sixth grade students participate in a 3-session fencing unit as part of our physical fitness programming. We are fortunate to have Simon Pitfield from the Davis Fencing Academy provide the instruction with support from classroom teachers and parent volunteers. Students learn the basics of fencing foot work during their first session (first position, “en garde”, advances, retreats, “extend” and lunges). During the second and third sessions, students suit up in vests, gloves and masks working with partners as they “lunge”, “parry”, and “riposte” with foils. We have been fortunate to offer this program since November 2007. Students begin their fencing instruction when we return from Thanksgiving break.

POPS Choir Update

Hello everyone! We are finally beginning vocal testing for 4th graders on Tuesday, 10/17 during lunch, so please come straight to the MPR. I’ll test vocal ranges and hear each student sing the high and low notes of some of favorite songs. Please have your favorites list ready.

At 12:30, I’ll also vocal test a couple pre-notified 5th graders. This week it will be Isla and Alyssa.

Since vocal testing a group this size takes about a month, the only time during the next four weeks we will have to practice as a group is at Friday rehearsals, so please try to attend each Friday from 3:05-4:00pm.

Thank you!
Mindy

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF: Kids Helping Kids

Kids can go trick-or-treating and save lives at the same time! North Davis students are again invited to participate in the United Nations Children’s Fund annual fundraising event during the Halloween season. UNICEF works throughout the world to provide children with life saving medicine, nutrition, clean water, sanitation, education and emergency relief. An estimated 7 million children are saved each year by the efforts of UNICEF and its partners.  The spare change, bills and checks collected by children really makes a difference in the world. Last year North Davis Elementary children raised $542.28 and collectively, Davis students raised about $14,310. All that little change really adds up! For example, a malnourished child can be fed for five days for $5. A year’s worth of clean, safe water for a child is only $15. With $165, UNICEF can purchase a bicycle to deliver medicine to children.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF information fliers and collection boxes will be distributed Oct. 19 and they can be returned to the office after Halloween. Look for the boxes in your child’s backpack. If your child would like to participate, keep the box; if not, please return it to the school. If you have any questions, contact Amrit Kaur at amritkr87@gmail.com.
