Opening Day and the start of the new season!

And just like that, the new season is here!

The opening day was a huge success with many of our sailors dressed up in pirate costumes. We were grateful we had the opportunity to do a few sail past practices which meant our new sailors are able to practice in different wind conditions.

(Image above) Our sailors practicing their sail past at the VIP jetty, much to the joy of the parents who saluted them (image below)!

The race for the Commodore's Cup was held in the morning of opening day, a change from last year as this year, several of the juniors are also involved in the Keel Boat racing in the afternoon.

Congratulations to all our winners for leading the way to a wonderful season!

Plenty of pirates were about after the race! More photos have been posted in our Facebook page including some amazing aerial images.

Thursday training is in full swing. Please be down at the club to rig your boats early and ready for the roll-call at 4pm and on-water by 4:15pm. It is expected that boats will be packed and sailors ready to leave home by 6:15pm. Coach K will now be monitoring the fitness levels of our sailors and advise areas of improvements. Should it rain, extended fitness and theory lessons will take the place of on-water activities.

The first summer race took place on Saturday, 13th October. We had a bit of a wild weather that morning, but a good majority braved it! Kudos to all!

Learning Nuggets

Discover Sailing Day is a wonderful family event where friends and families have the opportunity to test out sailing on either a keel boat or a sailing dinghy.

Many of us have been the supportive parent, yelling on the side lines and jumping on rock walls  for a glimpse of the kids sailing, but never had the opportunity or time to sail themselves. This Sunday is the perfect time! I've put together a few learning nuggets to impress the Skipper on your first sail!

1. Learning the lingo

Always a good idea to know a few words. While the above is quite common, some terms can be different. Such as the rope magically turns into a sheet when brought aboard. Also, when a Skipper yells 'Head!' it does not mean 'go to the toilet'...it means 'duck your head!' because the boom is about to jibe. Also good to remember is the term Boom....

Subtle difference...nothing major.

A more comprehensive list is found here:
https://www.endeavour-sailing.co.uk/training-information/glossary-of-sailing-terms.html

2. Anatomy of a boat
Learning to know the parts of a boat not only gets you out of trouble but also let you know where is the safe place to sit! You can also impress your Skipper who may then allow you to have a go at the tiller. There really isn't a lot to remember, here is a simplified diagram of it.

Although this (below) is also surprisingly accurate....

Have fun and don't be afraid to try new things!

Happy reading and keep on sailing!
