MBB-FBI: Former Adidas consultant Gassnola was back on the stand in Lower Manhattan, said Kansas coaches, including HC Self, were aware of the role of Three Stripes to push certain prospective student-athletes to Lawrence. Evidence of a text message thread & phone call between Gassnola & Self was presented in connection to current KU student-athlete De Sousa, who was also reportedly getting courted by Maryland. That said, Gassnola indicates Self, nor his staff, knew of a $20K payment to De Sousa's guardian. Gassnola also mentioned this process is "how things work" at the likes of Duke, North Carolina & Kentucky. More. (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann, "T.J. Gassnola's testimony about Kansas and other schools is believable not only because Gassnola is under oath--so risk of perjury--but also because he reached a plea deal with prosecutors. That deal would be endangered if he's shown to be lying or misleading, or omitting facts." (link); Duke HC Krzyzewski: “I think [college basketball] is actually pretty clean. […] I really haven't followed it (the on-going trial) that much. I think it's minute, it's a blip. It's not what's happening. ... We haven't lost guys because someone cheated. I haven't paid attention to it because I haven't been affected by it." (link); Presiding Judge Kaplan shut down defense attorneys when they tried to leverage the current public narrative around the NCAA & compensation of student-athletes. Kaplan: "I will not have it, Mr. Schachter, I will not have it. You're not going there. […] Ladies and gentlemen, we are here today because the government alleges that Jim Gatto committed two federal offenses when Adidas took a tiny portion of the money that it brought in and shared it with the families of the players on the court. Now, the purpose of this trial is not to determine whether the NCAA amateurism rules are good or bad. It has nothing to do with it. […] It belongs in the NCAA or the halls of Congress or in the boardrooms of universities. It has no proper bearing on this case. It doesn't matter if they were children of Bill Gates or of welfare mothers. That's not the issue." (link)
In examining the ongoing federal trial concerning MBB, The Athletic's O'Neil boils a large portion of the sport's problems down to the position that many HCs have shirked a basic component of their duty: finding, evaluating and developing players. Instead, she submits, HCs have ceded their own evaluation expertise to recruiting services, who have taken over the evaluation function, and rely increasingly on ACs, who are now largely responsible for convincing the players to commit. The "good ones," O'Neil notes, are still out there, getting in on players early and cultivating relationships; however, the "good ones," she adds are getting "harder to find." Notre Dame HC Brey also chimes in, observing: "The jobs we have and the financial windfall we enjoy and to think you can get yourself in a risky situation because you stop doing the work? That’s really freaking scary." Symptomatic of this underlying issue is the question of why programs would offer the sort of money being discussed in the trial for players who aren't necessarily program-changers. O'Neil addresses this, noting that the coaches alleged to have been involved were facing some type of added pressure. "Travis Ford was heading into a must-win season at Oklahoma State; Sean Miller can’t get over the hump and get to a Final Four at Arizona...and Louisville, despite all of Pitino's success, was in a near-constant battle to one-up Kentucky. Brey adds: "You get a guy at a crossroads in his career, where he’s trying to keep a job or in a new job, and that can sway you." (link)
DePaul AD Lenti Ponsetto and MBB HC Leitao have reportedly filed for an emergency order of protection against former AHC Carter, alleging that Carter made threatening comments towards them. According to the order, which was requested on September 25, Carter, upset at being let go from the DePaul coaching staff, told Leitao he would "physically bury him" and that he would "knock on [Leitao's] door at home." Additionally, Carter tweeted ostensibly threatening song lyrics earlier in the month, and those phrases were also included in the order, which Leitao requested also be extended to his wife and son. The university has since released a statement, which reads, in part: "Like many institutions, the University must sometimes seek assistance from the courts to protect its rights and its people. As these are pending legal matters, we are unfortunately unable to comment further." (link)
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit this week hinted that it would be unlikely to revive a class action lawsuit which claims the NCAA has an employer-employee relationship with FB student-athletes and therefore must pay them for time spent on the field. U.S. Circuit Court Judge Kleinfeld has argued that while such a relationship may exist between the student-athletes and the schools or conferences, the NCAA does not set the rules which govern FB activities, including scholarship compensation. "[A] student with one of these very ample football scholarships might arguably be an employee of USC, but even if he were, I don’t understand why he’d be an employee of the NCAA. It doesn’t pick them, it doesn’t bring them into the school, it doesn’t make the decision to award them a scholarship, it doesn’t tell them what to do. I don’t get the tie-in." In seeking a reversal of that decision, former USC FB student-athlete Dawson's attorney Rifkin recently argued that the NCAA, in fact, does set the rules, which the Pac-12 adopts: "It is beyond dispute that the NCAA sets the pay rules. It does so in the negative -- 'you cannot pay'" above a certain amount. In his response, Kleinfeld appeared unconvinced, saying: "It’s a limit; you don’t have to give the kids scholarships at that level. It’s just if you want to be as competitive in football as the other top football schools, you will. It’s an economic matter." (link)
A Jefferson County Circuit Court judge has dismissed a motion to compel mediation filed by a group of Louisville fans self-identified as the University of Louisville Protection and Advocacy Coalition which sought to reinstate 123 wins vacated by the UofL MBB team, including the 2013 national championship. The NCAA and institution have both filed to dismiss the suit, which argues that the vacation of wins constitutes a breach of contract to the fans. Judge Mitch Perry, who denied the motion for mediation, has yet to rule on case itself, but said in this week's hearing that he has made a decision. Perry's final order will determine whether the case moves forward or, if the case continues, whether the university will be remain a party to the lawsuit. (link)
After parting ways with Arizona, former FB HC Rodriguez discusses his time away from UA while his son, Rhett, continues his career as a Wildcat student-athlete. Rodriguez explains there's "always stress" when watching UA games due to his closeness with the players, but says watching his son, who played the entire second half of Saturday's game against Utah, adds an extra level of anxiety. "It's probably harder to watch in this kind of role because you have no control. You don't have any input in it whatsoever." Regarding the circumstances of his departure earlier this year, Rodriguez says his family has "handled it amazingly well," adding: "There's a lot they want to say and a lot I want to say. Hopefully sometime soon I'll be able to make some statements and move forward." Rodriguez, who spoke to the media for the first time this year after the game, also left open the possibility of a return to coaching, whether it's as an AC or HC in college or the NFL. "I think I have a few good years left. I'm anxious to get another opportunity and help somewhere in some role." (link)
Cal AD Knowlton gets a profile spread in the latest SportsBusiness Journal with details on his background as an Army Ranger, which included stints in Germany & Iraq. Golden Bears Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Simon-O'Neill, who has been a part of the Berkeley community since she was three years old, on Knowlton's arrival, "I’ve really been struck by how he transforms a room. He carries himself with a lot of confidence and that confidence is contagious. So, when he says we’re going to get something done, you believe him. He’s brought a lot of hope, excitement and optimism. […] We historically have been known, not only for our successes, but also for our challenges. Jim talks about embracing the challenges and how he hasn’t seen anything we can’t solve. It’s been good to have a new set of eyes." (link)

USA Today's Wolken reports more than 1,100 administrators are in Atlanta for this year's Women Leaders conference. A quick perusal of Twitter shows pics of Reed-Francois, Campos, Vogel, King, Cleary, Williams, Chun, and many more. (link, link); CBS Sports hoops reporter Rothstein says a deal is done between the Big 12 & Big East to play a "challenge" series in MBB starting in 2019-20. (link); Here's your full FB TV selections for Week 9. (link)

Boston College Senior Assoc. AD/Director of Development Ellison-Stewart notes the uniqueness of the $150M 'Greater Heights' push by the Eagles, which is following on the heels of the university's $1.605B 'Light the World' campaign. Ellison-Stewart: "If you ask anyone across the campus what our number one fundraising priority is, it’s athletics. So it’s unique that it’s a standalone campaign that is the only initiative before the next university-wide campaign. The goal of this campaign is let’s elevate our athletic program to the level of our academic program." The Heights columnist Goldman: "If the University can fulfill Jarmond’s long-term goals on the field and in its coffers, it’s possible that a feedback loop—with more athletic success comes more donations, and with more donations greater success can be found on the field—could fuel a significant improvement in BC’s standing nationwide." (link); BC's Learning Resources for Student-Athletes department set to be rebranded to the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Services. The shift is another piece of the new strategic plan implemented by AD Jarmond as the unit also has a new mission statement. (link)
Wichita State AD Boatright covered a bunch of ground during a rotary club address. Of note, Boatright said he believes student-athletes should be paid, but thinks figuring out the value proposition will be key. “You take a basketball team. One or two kids probably are marketable. Landry Shamet last year, he probably could’ve brought a little money. He had value, but you have kids on the end of the bench that don’t bring any value. Do you pay them the same? If so, why?” Also says anyone who believes WSU could start FB for less than $100M is "naïve" and that "If it were just football, it would start tomorrow. There is interest in football. There is just not a lot of interest in paying for football. That’s where the problem is." (link)
Illinois State's Board of Trustees will decide whether to green light up to $6.8M to replace lower bowl seating and add ADA compliant seats, box seating locations and a suite to Redbird Arena, as well as replace the floor in Horton Field House. The two projects - $6.2M for the arena upgrades and $600K for the field house floor - would be covered by bonds, which will be serviced by facility revenues. (link)
UConn FB student-athlete Thomas is in stable condition and making "good progress" according to team reports after suffering a stroke last Wednesday before a morning weightlifting session. Thomas' mother, Mary Beth Turner, thanked assistant athletic trainers VanWie and Salvatore, saying "Without their quick response, this horrible situation could have been devastating," and that "Eli will fight back as he has with every challenge that has come his way with 'Eli Style.'" Stadium’s Goodman breaks down the MBB HCs that could be the next to get hired by high major programs. The list includes UMBC HC Odom, Buffalo HC Oats, South Dakota State HC Otzelberger, Nevada HC Musselman, College of Charleston HC Grant, UNC Greensboro HC Miller, Loyola Chicago HC Moser, Montana HC DeCuire, Vermont HC Becker, Northern Kentucky HC Brannen, East Tennessee State HC Forbes, New Mexico HC Weir, Bucknell HC Davis, Boise State HC Rice, and Illinois State HC Muller. Goodman writes: "The Hot Seat gets most of the attention, but it’s only fair to give credit to the coaches who could and should be hot names after the season. These are 15 guys to keep an eye on, because they may not be long for their current spots — not when the big boys come calling." (link); Also notable from Goodman: "Multiple coaches told @WatchStadium they have filed transfer waivers recently after seeing that NCAA has become so lenient in this regard. Many feel NCAA concerned about potential lawsuits, reverting back to when granted nearly all waiver requests." (link)
Endeavor, current owner of IMG College & IMG College Licensing, is pulling out of a deal through which Saudi Arabia would have invested $400M into the company for a 5-10% stake, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The report comes amid growing national pressure for both public and private entities to take a stand against the Saudi government following the disappearance and possible murder of Saudi national and American permanent resident journalist Khashoggi, who was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey earlier this month. Despite representing a number of high-profile journalists, such as Farrow, O'Brien and Scarborough, Endeavor is not terminating the deal due to client pressure, THR cites a source as saying, adding: "The company would have gone this path regardless." If you arrive in a new city at night, do you eat dinner in the hotel or go out & explore? It's a question leaders can ask to gauge the trait of curiosity in potential team members, according to Harvard Business School professor Gino. I found this podcast quite interesting as it explores the value of knowing when to keep asking questions versus when the time is right to put your nose down & get work done. Also from Gino, "…there is no evidence of from organizations. I've studied that suggests that when you allow curiosity to stay alive that efficiency becomes a problem that somehow people are less productive. […]  I think leaders can set the way by giving the right example. So being the first one asking questions like why do we do it this way or what? If we were to look at the situations differently people are paying attention to what the leader is doing. And so those are small ways in which they might feel that curiosity is encouraged in the team or in the workplace more generally." Lots more. (link)

Auburn AD Greene discussed the state of his FB program and support for HC Malzahn. Greene: "I recognize that football and Auburn football and the standing of a coach is a hot topic, considering we’re not really where we want to be, where we expected to be. ... Unfortunately, we’re going through a period of time right now where not everything is clicking. So part of our responsibility is to make sure we’re getting the right things in place, sticking with that process and understanding that this isn’t a week-to-week deal here." On feedback from fans & boosters, "They don’t have to tell me, I already know. I’m sitting there watching the games like everybody else is." (link)
Bowling Green AD Moosbrugger on his decision to part ways with FB HC Jinks, "I kept going back and forth with it. It ultimately came down to the best interest of our student athletes. I thought it was the right time to do it at this time of the season. [...] Obviously emotional. He believes 100 percent that he’s the man for the job and that’s what I want out of a head coach. I was glad he didn’t come in and say, 'Yeah, OK, thanks.' He thinks I’m wrong. He probably still thinks I’m wrong. So that was a tough conversation." Moosbrugger also says no donors have committed to covering the cash still owed to Jinks as the Falcons will use university athletics funds. (link)
Gridiron Behavior: LSU dinged $100K by the SEC for fans rushing the field after Saturday's win over Georgia. The cash will come from athletic department funds. (link); U.S. Representative from Louisiana Graves starts a GoFundMe effort to help LSU cover the $100K. Looks like it's at ~$7,500 so far. (link); No disciplinary measures or fines for Florida HC Mullen or Vanderbilt peer Mason for their on-field jawing during Saturdays' first half that led to the clearing of both benches. (link); Iowa State supporters also ended up on the field after a high-profile win over West Virginia & Mountaineers HC Holgorsen called it "unprofessional" as it was "dicey" getting his student-athletes to the locker room. (link)
The Portland Business Journal's Kish's "Breaking up the boys club: Inside Nike's struggle to reform its culture after decades of complaints" has just emerged from behind a paywall. While 48% of Nike's employees are women, only 29% of VPs are and only three of 12 board members. The PBJ reviewed each of the 27 complaints filed since 2013, but reviewed top-line data on all 143 civil rights complaints filed since 1993, "The complaints reveal similar and overlapping allegations of discrimination going back years, but also Nike's strong track record of defending against such claims. The state found 'no substantial evidence' in 62 of the 143 complaints. Thirty-two complaints were withdrawn when the former Nike employee decided to pursue a civil lawsuit. Five of the complaints were settled." Former software engineer Lyles, who is transgender, alleged gender harassment and a hostile workplace as recently as last month: "They talked a great game on LGBTQ issues, but when you ask them to actually stand up for these issues, it gets communicated to you that you are the problem." Lots more, including a timeline of the highs and lows for 2018, and this from former exec Keppinger on co-founder Knight: "It's kind of like there's just this denial of the reality of what was going on internally." (link)
Cord-cutting option fuboTV has more than doubled its subscriber base from this time last year (100K to 250K) & even though the service markets itself as "a sports-first replacement product," there's been no deal with ESPN. Looks like that might be about to change. (link); Interesting read from Geek Wire on the experience of watching the NFL's Thursday Night FB product on Twitch. The experience is called "fantasy football-like." Here's an example: "...perhaps most compelling is how fans can make quarterly predictions, answering questions about varying projected stats — number of touchdowns; rushing yards; field goals; total possession time; average yards per play; etc. After each quarter, the user (you need a Twitch account) is rewarded with points and ranked against others on a live leaderboard." (link)
Also Noticed: UCF AD White to the Knights' fanbase, "To those in #KnightNation who are frustrated by the continued lack of respect in the polls when compared to older college football brands: it’s ok! We’re the fastest growing University & city in the country, w/ the best recruiting base. They don’t understand yet, but they will!" (link); The AAC's MBB Tourney now has Air Force Reserve as its title sponsor this season. (link); Transitioning DI Cal Baptist MBB season tickets have set a school record & are up 31% year over year. (link); Notre Dame-Pitt on NBC did a 2.12 overnight TV rating. (link); Check-out the new 360-degree center-hung video board for the Atlanta Hawks. 4,447 square feet of display surface. (link); Nebraska FB will wear throwback unis that feature helmets with a leather strap look of the olden days. (link); How did I miss Ohio State's band doing an impressive collective floss on the field last Saturday? (link); Lululemon founder Wilson has a new book coming out today, in it he recounts a story of meeting with Under Armour back in 2008 with the idea of acquiring UA. Wilson: "However, after a meeting with Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank in 2008, I couldn't see Kevin's macho philosophy working with that of the Super Girls. Under Armour, I thought, had an in-your-face image of winning at all costs, male chauvinism, and leaving everybody else in the dust." (link)
