Rotary, with the help of significant charitable funding, has played a leading role in the worldwide fight against polio, are now very close to achieving the goal of completely eradicating the disease. One or two pockets still remain across the World which still produce a few new cases every year. World Polio Day on 24 October is designed to raise awareness, and to promote the cause Tenterden Rotary Club will be floodlighting St Mildred's Church and the Town Hall in purple, and hosting an event in St Mildred's Church starting at 7pm. Come along to the event (please wear purple!) and enjoy a glass or two of wine, listen to a short presentation, and meet our Stilt Walker who will be dressed in Purple. Rotary will also be collecting in the street during the day. Every donation to "End Polio Now" made to Rotary will be tripled by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who have already given billions to the cause.
Why purple? Purple represents the colour of the dye placed on a child’s finger to show they have been immunised against the disease. With millions to vaccinate this makes it easier to track.
Smallpox is the only human disease ever to be eradicated. Let’s make polio the second. Join the fight on World Polio Day
