Return to Sender: An artistic exploration of encounters between Europe and the Caribbean.

"As both curator and participating artist, this exhibition was partly prompted by recent work of mine that explores trans-national connections between Poland and the global South, Haïti in particular. The research took me to Miami's Little Haiti where I encountered an extraordinary poet, storyteller, dramatist, and cultural ambassador of this part of Miami, Mr. Jan Mapou who generously granted me access to his digital collection of historical postcards depicting Haiti and its people dating back to the early 1900s."J.K.

Yanira Collado lives/works in Miami, FL. Collado’s Artist Residency fellowships include the African Heritage Cultural Center, Liberty City, FL, 2011-2012 and Bridge Red Art Center North Miami, FL, 2013-present.

Santiago “Chago” Rodriguez. Selected Works 2001 – 2012.

“Chago” Rodríguez is a Miami based artist who was born in 1940 in Guantánamo, Cuba. He graduated from chemical and agronomic engineering from the Universities of Oriente and La Habana, respectively.

Farside Gallery and Art@Work are located at Dr. Arturo F. Mosquera’s orthodontic office and garden where he and his wife, Liza, have been showcasing exhibits of their collection since 1998, which they rotate on an annual basis.  In addition, they host periodically individual artists’ solo exhibits in the lobby of the office for the benefit of the patients of the practice, their family and the community at large.

Though blacks in the diaspora are famous for their musical and dance contributions to the world, their contributions to the visual arts are much less well known or recognized. It is the goal of the gallery and academy to increase the awareness of the diverse artistic production of the black visual artists and show their value and contribution to the multicultural heritage of the United States. The gallery provides a mirror by which diaspora artists can see themselves and understand their reality. They interpret this reality and show it to the diaspora community and the rest of the world.

Relational Undercurrents is a major survey exhibition of twenty-first-century art from islands throughout the Caribbean basin. Four sections reveal thematic ideas shared by artists whose roots are in the Caribbean: Conceptual Mappings, Perpetual Horizons, Landscape Ecologies, and Representational Acts. The exhibition features artists whose painting, installation art, sculpture, photography, video, and performance pieces challenge the notion that the Caribbean is insulated and fragmented.

The most significant presentation of the artist’s work to date, the project includes examples of the artist’s work produced over the last five years, embedded within a new installation environment that references a night garden.

The multimedia, a museum-wide installation will reflect Lehr’s eco-feminist philosophy, the concept of mankind working with nature rather than dominating over it. Lehr uses the classical myth of Ariadne to explore the beauty, fragility, and interconnectedness of the endangered aquatic ecosystem of the South Florida coast.

“Forever Celia,” is the most comprehensive exhibit ever assembled on the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz. The largest exhibition of artifacts from Cruz’s life and work. The scale of the show will surpass that of the 2005 Smithsonian exhibit on the singer’s life. The show will feature items from Celia’s trademark extravagant wardrobe as well as hundreds of awards, photographs, videos, and never-before-seen artifacts culled from her personal collection.

“American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora attempts to understand the impact the Cuban Diaspora has had on our world today. We showcase the history, culture and contribution the Cuban Diaspora has given to the arts and humanities. We serve the people of Miami and visitors from around the world that wish to look deeper into a history that is often underreported.”
