HVRA AGM Wed., Oct. 17, 6:30-9 pm

Just a reminder that the HVRA AGM is happening this Wednesday, October 17, from 6:30-9 pm at Kensington Gardens, 45 Brunswick. It will be, as always, a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with neighbours, to meet new ones and to discuss what’s been happening in HV since the last AGM. There will be, of course, the election of the Board. If you missed the list of candidates in last week’s eblast, check out the web page  for that information. Remember, you must be a member to vote so, if you’re not a member, sign up or renew your membership here. There will also be a membership table at the AGM.

The speaker this year will be Lydia Wong, who will give us an illustrated report on the backyard pollinators she studied in Harbord Village last summer. Her enthusiasm for her topic is contagious, her presentations are amusing and concise, and her study raises a number of questions about our relationship with wild urban nature.

Light refreshments will be available.

See you there!

Kensington Market Walking Tour Fundraiser for St. Stephen’s Windows Sat., Oct. 20, 1pm

The Kensington Market Historical Association is offering one of their popular hour-and-a-half tours of the market this Saturday, October 20, at 1 pm. All the proceeds from the tour will go directly to the window restoration fund at St. Stephen-in-the-Field (College and Bellevue). As you may know, this is one of the oldest and most distinctive churches in the city with beautiful stained glass windows that are now in a dangerously fragile state. A grant from the City will provide half of the necessary funds for restoration but the rest depends on fundraising. While the church is not geographically in HV, it has always been a good neighbour.

The tour starts at 1pm at the Church where Rev. Maggie Helwig will show folks around, then everyone will head off to the Market for the rest of the tour ending up at Maison Close on Kensington Avenue for snacks, drinks and conversation. The cost is $50 which includes the tour, snacks, a glass of wine/beer and a tax receipt. To sign up for the tour and to get more information here

Bloor/Bathurst Streets Closures Sunday Oct., 21

Bathurst Street from Bloor to the Lakeshore and Bloor Street from Bathurst to Bay will be closed this Sunday, October 21 from 8-10:45 am for a marathon. For a list of all road closures, check here. It might be a good morning to sleep in and get a later start on all those trips about town you planned. That is unless you’re going to be one of those runners along Bloor Street.

Three “Winners” in the HV Membership Renewal Contest

The results are in and we are very pleased with the number of HV residents who took the time to renew their memberships online during the “Membership Renewal Contest”.

We are pleased to announce the names of our three “winners”:

Tim Bentley
Jodee McCaw
Diane Roblin

If you didn’t get a chance to renew and still want to do so before the AGM on Wednesday, October 17, you can do it here or, at the membership table at the AGM.

Community Swim at Central Tech

As the days shorten and get cooler and less inviting to spend outdoors, you might want to consider an afternoon splashing in the Central Tech Pool. Every Saturday from 2-4 pm, the pool is open for the Community Swim. Recreational and lane swimming is available and there is a life guard on duty. If you’ve never been, the pool is located at the corner of Lippincott/Sussex, Door 16. A mere $2 donation per person is “appreciated” at the door. For more info regarding the community swim at Central Tech email the organizers

EEKS! Frankenstein at the Lillian Smith Library

Just in time for Halloween, the Merril Collection at Lillian Smith Library is presenting an exhibit: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein: 200 Years of Mad Science, which celebrates, in books and graphic novels (from the 1930's to the present day) what many consider the very first "science fiction" novel, published in 1818. Shelley's novel introduced themes which have shaped speculative fiction over the last 200 years: the mad scientist, the creation of artificial life, the quest for immortality, the undead, and the meaning of human identity itself.

The Merril Collection is located on the 3rd floor of Lillian Smith Library and is open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm and 9am-5pm on Saturdays, closed Sundays. The Exhibit is open until January, 2019.

It's free and all are welcome!
