Last Candidate Video, Candidate Surveys, Electoral Reform Compass... and more!

Hi everyone,

Further to our last update, we wanted to let you know that video from the October 3 Last Candidate Standing debate is now on-line.

The video (in two parts), along with a play-by-play listing of the various rounds and sets of debates, can be found on our website. Check it out! It’s a unique record of ideas (and, in some cases, dance moves!) from a full 44 candidates running for mayor and council.

A big thank you to Rick Etkin Productions (Rick Etkin and Gary Jones) for their video work at, and after, the event.

And hey, while you’re here, a few other items to pass along…

Park Board Candidate & Waterfront Surveys

The VPSN reached out to all 33 candidates and invited them to share their thoughts on population change, homelessness, climate change, and reconciliation… and a variety of other issues that affect Parks and Rec facilities. Read the responses we received to our Park Board Candidate survey on our website

Meanwhile, the Waterfront Initiative – a coalition led by the Georgia Straight Alliance (and of which the VPSN is proud member) – asked all candidates in the Vancouver municipal election to share their thoughts on our waterfront. The results are now live, and you can see them here.

Electoral Reform in BC - Vote Compass Tool

This past Monday, Antony Hodgson of Fair Voting BC attended our monthly meet-up and gave a presentation on electoral reform at both the provincial and municipal level. It was a great event, and we’d like to extend a big thank you both to Antony and the folks that came out to learn more about this important opportunity. We'll be sharing more on this subject on our website over the next few weeks.

The Provincial Referendum on Electoral Reform will take place between October 22 and November 30. One important resource that has been circulating is a “vote compass” tool – a quick survey-based assessment that allows you to rate which values you find most important in an election system (e.g. access to a local representative, a variety of choice, equity of vote distribution, etc.). The tool then assesses your choices against the various voting systems that are being considered in the upcoming provincial referendum.

If you have a few moments, we invite you check it out. The website is still in development, but the questions have been vetted through Elections BC, and you can find the beta version here.
