It's almost Halloween! Sausalito goes all out for Halloween, and several Library staff members plan their costumes and decorations all year around. The Children's Room is decorated and our Halloween books are flying off the shelves.

We're getting ready for the holiday with a series of programs. We're making magic wands this Wednesday and next Wednesday we're watching Hotel Transylvania (2012, PG, 91 min.).

After a month of research and reading, I have the first of what will be a series of book lists about bodies and sex. I've started with the book list for young children. I ended up writing quite a lot about the book list and have only excerpted it below. If you're interested in more details, please see the longer piece on our website or the annotations on the book list itself.

Molly has a list of current, popular graphic novels.

In the past week I've also been doing a lot of 'reader's advisory.' That's what librarians call it when we make recommendations in response to individual requests. For example, the bodies and sex book list project started as a result of a mother's request.

I am always happy to do reader's advisory, so please don't be afraid to ask. If you have a complicated request, it might be best to send an email, but you can also grab me anytime I'm on the Reference desk.

Best,
Erin

Books about Bodies and Sex for Young Children

Children are curious about their bodies and sex. Some children ask lots of questions and some don't, but access to developmentally appropriate resources will help make sure children get the information they need.

My hope is that this list can help you locate books that feel right for you to read with your child, or to read before speaking to your child to identify topics to discuss and to prepare answers to questions. I hope these books will help you articulate what you want to say in discussions with your child.

The book list is annotated to provide some context and details about the content of the individual books. I have also written a lengthy analysis of three of the titles that I especially recommend: Tell Me About Sex, Grandma by Anastasia Higginbotham, What Makes a Baby by Cory Silverberg, and Who Are You: A Kid’s Guide to Gender Identity by Brook Pessin-Whedbee. That analysis is too long for the newsletter, but I've posted it on a new book list page. Please take a look at it!

I hope this book list is helpful, whether it fits your family or not. I'm interested in hearing any and all feedback.

Six new graphic novels your kids will want

Here are six exciting new graphic novels in the library’s children’s collection.

The first four - Dog Man: Lord of the Fleas, Babysitters Club: Kristy’s Big Day, Hermes: Tales of the Trickster, and Amulet: Supernova - are new installments in longer running series. Each one varies in style and tone, yet all four have proven to have incredible appeal. These guys are the equivalent of hit-em-out-of-the-park sluggers, able to appeal to readers across an awesomely wide range of reading abilities.  Basically, I want you to know: They’re here! Jump on the waitlist for each one. The readers in your house will thank you. The other two - Be Prepared and Mr Wolf’s Class - are new stand-alone stories that are exceptionally well done, and hold strong promise for their own home run appeal.

Enjoy!
