New Drawing Course For All

I love drawing! I have recently had several wonderful occasions to share my enthusiasm for drawing, with artists and non artists alike, including the workshop above. This photo was taken during Drawing: The Art of Touch workshop at the Arts and Health Dialogue a (non)conference with renowned nurse theorist Jean Watson in Brighton last weekend (a truly inspirational event, which will hopefully be repeated in future).

For me drawing is a magical thing, making us see the world differently, engaging us in the art of looking. My emphasis is on the process, the materials, enjoying the act of drawing, rather than on the actual drawing itself. I believe if you trust in the process, the drawing will follow. I often encourage participants to close their eyes, draw by touch, or simply mark make, to discover new ways of working.

This term I am teaching a new course suitable for all comers. As an introduction to drawing, all the sessions are based on observation, giving you the skills for improving your 'eye'. Alongside this, there will be room for experimentation and appreciating that drawings can emerge out of sometimes quite ‘messy’ starting points. This is to help get over the fear of the blank page, the fear that you may ‘go wrong’ - there is no such thing as a wrong drawing: a drawing is a drawing, a line is a line, a mark is a mark, and if you want to move it, you can redraw it, layer, rub out, emphasise, change.

If you would like to join in, you can sign up for all or some of the remaining 5 sessions. Each one will be a stand alone session, however they are designed to flow from one to the other, to give you a broad base for developing your drawing skills over the term. All materials are provided. See details and dates below.

OTHER NEWS........

Other new workshops include Experimental Life Drawing - the last 2 monthly one day workshops in Arundel, on Mon 19 Nov and Fri 7 Dec.

In 2019 I shall be running a NEW ongoing course in Arundel, based on my Creative Journeys course in Shoreham, working on a smaller scale, using sketchbooks, drawing, mixed media and painting, to explore a different subject each term. This will be for students wishing to explore and develop ideas over a more prolonged period. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Finally, I am showing work this week at the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea, represented by  Candida Stevens Gallery in Chichester. Contact me if you would like free tickets.
