Bump my head winners
Congratulations to the winners from the 'school bump my head' competition. These designs will now be used as stickers to point out when a child gets a bump on their head. The winners were chosen by the Head Girl and Head Boy and were taken across all phases. Obviously the school notifies parents and carers when a child bumps their head and does not rely solely upon a sticker!
Federating with Avonmore Primary School - consultation
For the last two years the Fox Federation has been working very closely with Avonmore Primary School in West Kensington. Subject specialists and leadership have worked with the teachers there to put in place a strong structure and a robust plan for the future. Paul Cotter took on the role of Executive Head and Maya Wittleton, who worked for many years at Fox and went on to become Deputy Head at Ashburnham, is now the Head teacher at Avonmore.
We would like to bring Avonmore into our Federation to formalise the partnership between us. Currently, Avonmore has its own Governing Body. By joining the Federation, that Governing Body would be dissolved, and our Governing Body would be reconstituted to have responsibility for an additional school. Attached is a letter explaining the reasoning and process.
Poppy Day Poem Competition - Phase B and C (Year 2 - 6)
On Sunday 11th November 2018 it will be 100 years since the end of World War I. It is highly likely that we are all connected to The First World War in some way or another. Much of what we know about World War I is due to poems written at the time.
We are asking children to write their own poems around the theme of remembrance. More information can be found out here.
Fox Book Club - Cloudbusting
The next Year 5 and 6 Fox Book Club meeting is on Tuesday 6th November 3:45 -4:45 and we will be discussing‘Cloudbusting’ by Malorie Blackman. Please read it and come ready to share your ideas with other children and parents/carers from Years 5 and 6. As always, there will be snacks and drinks to accompany the discussions. Reading Gladiators
We were thrilled to have so many parents, carers and pupils attend our first Reading Gladiators sessions of the year. Year 2 and 3 should be immensely proud of their commitment to Reading Gladiators already this year! ‘The Glassmaker’s Daughter’ was a lovely book to kick the year off and a particular highlight was the group’s discussions on what it meant to truly be happy. Remember, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.
Year 4 and 5 Reading Gladiators thoroughly enjoyed discussing the entertaining Angelino from ‘The Tale of Angelino’ by David Almond. We focused on the different characters and talked about how David Almond creates humour in the story. We also started the mini challenge below, which can be completed over half term. Best entries will be displayed in the library! Please hand any entries to Mr Byrne Smith in Year 4.
Mini Challenge – Ms Monteverdi’s Art Class
David Almond is passionate about allowing children time and space to dream, to exercise their imaginations.
Create a scene entitled ‘A World of Pure Imagination’, showing a snapshot of the world from within your imagination.
You could add an imaginary friend, something that scares you, your future self, your favourite thing. Arrange them on a large sheet of paper with an annotation such as ...a dream/a friend/a fear.
Fabulous Year 6 poetry
Year 5 - French baking extravaganza!
Year 5 have been baking bread as part of their DT project. We were lucky enough to be taught by a local baker - Jean-Christophe from Maison Puget on Portobello Road.
The bread was very tasty - feedback from the parents was particularly favourable! Watch out Paul Hollywood!

If you think your child might have some ‘tablet time’ over the half term period, then I highly recommend the apps produced by the Dragon Box team. In particular, I would recommend Dragon Box numbers, for children in Year 1, Reception and below. This app is quite incredible in its ability to help children develop number sense: proportionality, place value, part-part whole and simple addition and subtraction – all through the medium of play. It is no wonder that it has won several prizes and awards. Dragon Box also have several other apps suitable for primary aged children – including Dragon Box Big Numbers, which is a very playful approach to understanding formal column addition and subtraction. For those of you with children in Year 5 or 6 or older, they also have incredible apps on algebra and geometry. Last but not least, they’ve just produced an app to teach and explore the rules of chess. It doesn’t disappoint. I’ve tried them all – they are very good. So, if your children are going to be on a screen over the half term, better that it’s spent playing something really good and educational!!
Year 4, 5 and 6 visit Great Ormond Street Hospital to learn CPR skills
Year 4, 5 and 6 visited Great Ormond Street Hospital this week to celebrate 'Restart a Heart day'. They were lucky enough to have personalised tuition from paramedics, nurses and medical staff on how to do CPR. They also were introduced to a defibrillator machine. We are lucky enough to have our own defibrillator machine in school (on the ground floor-look for the green sign).

Please don't drive up Edge Street
Please can parents refrain from driving up Edge Street in the morning and afternoon to drop and pick up their children. We have many children and their families congregating around the Edge Street entrance and rushing up the road/pavement to get to school. Children are not always as observant as they should be. If parents need to drive, they should find a nearby parking space and drop their children off appropriately.
