LA FPI's mid-October 2018 eBlast!

Meet the Instigators

Tanyah Tavorn is an arts manager, technician, designer, and one of your eBlast editors. She can often be found running around in black backstage or building something for a show. Tanyah is from Hawaii, and connected with LA FPI after she moved to southern California. Though not a playwright herself, she is often on and around the stage in other capacities, and loves supporting other artists. So send short write-ups about your plays, projects and opportunities to info@lafpi.com so we can share the fabulous work that you're up to.

SHINE is a monthly storytelling event which features inspiring true stories, held at Santa Monica Playhouse. If you have a story that fits the theme, please email Isabel Storey, Producer, at Isabel@storeyproductions.com. For full submission guidelines and details about the event, please see website. WOMEN at WORK on STAGE

SORORITY presents two new plays and two new musicals as staged readings this fall. These works are funny, feminist, and unapologetically queer.
  • CAMBERET, written by and starring Amber Hurst Martin. Classically-trained singer Amber Hurst Martin returns to Rockwell with her solo cabaret touching significantly on her experiences as a woman of color in Hollywood. Sunday, October 21 at Rockwell. Tickets here.
  • LESBIAN LOVE OCTAGON, written by Kimberlea Kressal and Will Larche, directed by Gina Young. A concert of songs about Sue, a less-than-butch dyke with a broken heart, and her Lower East Side community of high femme princesses, rockabilly butches, trans guys and more. Wednesday, October 24 at the Bootleg. Tickets here.
  • COMB YOUR HAIR (OR YOU'LL LOOK LIKE A SLAVE) and HONORABLE MENTION, written and directed by Leelee Jackson. An ensemble cast of black women featuring Karen Eilbacher takes on numerous roles in a staged reading built around testimonies black women gave the playwright about experiences with their hair. These knowingly funny and searingly critical vignettes take on profiling, misogynoir and so much more. October 26 and 27 at the Lyric-Hyperion. Tickets here.
  • GRAND CANYON PUSSY (OR HOW TO BE QUEER IN UTAH), written by Anna Renee Winget, directed by Olivia Buntaine. An unapologetic exploration of the friction between queer identity and the Mormon Church, with a young, queer Mormon woman who is a church singer and Zion National Park Tour Guide by day, and a Drag King/Femme Queen at night. This show contains adult language and plenty of pills, goddesses, mountainous peaks, dildos, floral prints, sequins, and well, pink. November 8 and 9 at the Lyric-Hyperion. Tickets here.
