Homestead Harvest News

October 17, 2018

Thankful for the good rains from Hurricane Michael. Luckily we did not have much damage from the second hurricane in 2 weeks. The preparation work before the storm is getting old so we are hoping that Mother Nature has gotten over the hurricane temper tantrum.

This week is our last week of regular markets for 2018. Next week the family prepares for and celebrates the first of the children's weddings. We will begin making weekly deliveries to the Raleigh area on Friday, Nov. 2nd. Please contact Jan if you would like to meet in north Raleigh to pick up meat or eggs.

The turkeys will be delivered to the Holiday markets in Raleigh on Nov. 17th and in Carrboro on Nov. 20th. There are still a few left if you want a fresh, free-range, heritage turkey.

This week at the markets we will have:
  • Frozen whole and half chicken, FRESH Saturday only
  • Pork sausage (hot, kielbasa, zesty Italian, and breakfast links)
  • Beef (roasts, Hotdogs, ribs, and ground beef)
  • Steaks!  Ribeye, T-Bone, Chuck Eye, Sirloin Tip, Flank, Flat Iron

Big ducks...little ducks

I believe the big ducks would be happy to have hurricane rains all the time. Just before the Michael rains, we got a batch of Muscovy meat ducks. Notice how when they first come they are so loud? That's because they are cold and scared. Video  After they have some water and get warmed up they are almost silent. Video

Predator alert!

Jan was out of town for a soccer tournament last Sunday and Monday. The schedule for the animals had a little more flexibility than normal and not as much human activity in the fields which emboldened the hawks. We saw evidence of the hawk attacks when we returned. This is a view of a typical morning opening the chicken wagon. Video Tuesday's opening was quite different! Video
