Pollinators at Work in the Gardens – guided walks for Friends

Join local expert, Dr Roger Farrow, a retired entomologist from CSIRO, on a walk through the Gardens observing a variety of pollinators at work. Discover the myriad of ways flowers attract pollinators and guide them to their pollen. Visual aids will be used to help identify pollinators.

Cost: Free.

Bookings: This walk is only for Friends of the ANBG.

  • Volunteer Guides and Plant Science Group members: Please note that Dr Farrow will also be leading separate walks for members of the Volunteer Guides and Plant Science Group. Those walks will be advertised at their meetings, and bookings are organised through those groups.
  • Other members of the Friends: bookings are essential.

George Wilson is an Honorary Professor at the ANU, Fenner School of Environment and Society. He focuses on developing wildlife industries and tourism opportunities that support conservation and integrating traditional knowledge and wildlife science into the management of Indigenous and Aboriginal land.

Associate Professor Jamie Pittock: ‘Can the world feed 10 billion people sustainably?

Jamie Pittock is Associate Professor in the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the ANU. He is also Director of International Programs for the UNESCO Chair in Water Economics and Transboundary Water Governance at the ANU.

Dr Laura Dawes: ‘Hedgerows for victory! Wild plant gathering to keep the wartime medicine cabinet stocked

Laura Dawes is a medical historian and author, most recently of Fighting Fit: The Wartime Battle for Britain's Health. After stints at Oxford, Harvard, and Cambridge, she now calls Canberra home.

Nicki Taws: ‘Birds in revegetated habitat

Nicki Taws is a Project Manager with Greening Australia in Canberra. For the last 15 years Nicki has worked on the restoration of woodlands and grasslands with a particular focus on how best to provide habitat for birds and other native fauna.

Emeritus Professor Jim Hone: ‘In the footsteps of Alfred Russel Wallace

Jim is Emeritus Professor in the Institute of Applied Ecology at the University of Canberra. He has extensive research experience in wildlife ecology and management, especially of birds and mammals.

Entrance: A small donation to the Friends at the entrance is appreciated. Such funds support the Gardens.

Limited numbers: Thursday Talks have become so popular that, for safety reasons, we have to ensure that we don't exceed the limit of 90 in the Theatrette. Please arrive early to ensure a seat.

Friends Photographic Group annual exhibition – ‘Perspectives’

22 November–9 December 2018 
Visitors Centre, Australian National Botanic Gardens.

This is the Group's major fund-raiser for the Friends for the year, and great way to both see the Photo Group's work and purchase a special framed or unframed photo or a unique card featuring the spectacular plant and bird life of the Gardens.

Annual General Meeting followed by members ‘Show & Tell’ your best photos of the year (limit of 10 per contributing member).

This meeting will follow an early morning bird walk organised with Tricia Morton (maximum 10 members), and a 9:15am members'  breakfast at Pollen Café. Contact Helen Dawes at helendawes54@gmail.com.

Around and About

12th Australasian Plant Conservation Conference - some volunteers needed

The above conference will take place from 1115 November 2018 at the CSIRO Discovery Centre. The theme is Moving house - a new age for plant translocation and restoration.

The conference is being organised by the Australian Network for Plant Conservation (ANPC) and the Centre for Australian National Biodiversity Research (CANBR). The Friends are a member of ANPC and have close contact with CANBR. The organisers would appreciate some volunteer assistance for the conference, mainly to help staff the reception desk and pack the satchels to be provided to participants. The Art of Botanical Illustration 2018

Biennial Exhibition presented by the Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Exquisitely painted botanic art will be exhibited at The Art of Botanical Illustration at Domain House Gallery from 13–28 October.

The exhibition is a collection of approximately 170 original works by talented artists from Victoria, interstate and overseas, who have used a variety of techniques, media and sizes.

All exhibited art is available for purchase and suits both avid collectors and first-time buyers.

Bush Blitz comes to the ANBG for a Community Day

Sunday 2 December 2018, 10am–3pm

Budding naturalists of all ages are invited to join Bush Blitz scientists to discover first-hand what Bush Blitz is all about, when Bush Blitz comes to the Australian National Botanic Gardens as part of its next species-discovery expedition.

Bush Blitz is Australia’s largest nature discovery program. Many of you will have heard about the program, and the many species discovered on remote expeditions. Bush Blitz has received funding to run a further 15 expeditions around Australia over the next five years and the first of them will take place in the ACT from 26 November to 6 December 2018.

The Community Day will give visitors a chance to learn about taxonomy, interact with Bush Blitz scientists, get involved with local community groups and even learn how to identify species and contribute to our knowledge of Australian biodiversity.

If you would like to contribute ideas, help out on the day, or just want to be kept up to date on the event, please contact the event coordinator, Paula Banks, at paula.banks@environment.gov.au.

Bush Blitz is managed by Parks Australia, is based at the Gardens, and has worked closely with the Gardens on expeditions as well as events and projects such as the 45th anniversary celebrations, the native bee hotel, and school holiday programs and Science in ACTion.

Opulent Journeys is arranging a Singapore Gardens Tour led by Kim Woods Rabbidge in March 2019, in association with the Australian Association of Friends of Botanic Gardens.
