“One more Christian, One fewer Scot?”
Asian Theology and Scottish Context

One more Christian, one fewer Chinese” was a common charge made against missionary endeavour in 19th Century China. The implication was that membership of the Christian Church distances people from the deepest possible engagement with their cultural context. Contextual theology arose in East Asia and spread throughout the world in great part to answer that concern. But can the impulses to catholicity and context that are inherent in Christian faith ever be fully reconciled?

Dear friends
As I begin my new role as Synod World Church Advocate I would find it helpful to hear from you about World Church partnerships and links you currently have, whether it be as a congregation, a project you support, a personal friendship link or someone from your congregation living in another country. It would also be good to hear your suggestions of partnerships we could develop as well as how we maintain our existing partnerships. Please contact me via urc@bungie.scot with the subject ‘World Church’ or send your response to the Synod office. I am meeting with others in the Synod to discuss World Church Partnership on November 12. It would be good to hear from you before then so I can include your comments and ideas in a short presentation I am to make.
Thank you in advance!

Wedding Dresses through the Ages  Exhibition

An Exhibition of 32 different wedding dresses, veils, photographs and memorabilia from the 1950s to the present day with one dress dating from 1939 were on display. Bungie produced large posters with text referring to weddings taken from the Bible. Tea and wedding cake was enjoyed by all. The exhibition was a huge success thanks to our congregation, their families and friends who loaned all the dresses and memorabilia for the exhibition.

News from Fife and Tayside Pastorate.......

On Sunday 23rd September Newburgh URC received the service via YouTube broadcast from Dunfermline URC. This is part of the trials taking place across the five northerly Synods at looking how services can be provided in these times. The service was well received in Newburgh and although it was broadcast via a tablet camera the sound and quality were good. If this is to happen on a more regular basis and investment in cameras/mixing desk and installation of TV’s may well be required, but we all have to start somewhere. On 14th October the service will be broadcast to Dundee URC.

Sunday 30th September was harvest and invite a friend Sunday for Dunfermline URC. As part of exploring our community involvement we closed the church building for the day and met in Crossford Village Hall (about 2 miles away). Although no-one from the village who is not involved with the Church came along, we did have two people who responded to the invite a friend. 5 children were present who took part in various harvest activities including attempting to make a clock powered by a lemon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to formally invite you to attend the launch of Scottish Interfaith Week 2018 on Monday 12th November from 5.15pm – 8.15pm at the Town House, Aberdeen. Scottish Interfaith Week takes place from 11th – 18th November with events held all over Scotland celebrating Scotland’s religious diversity. You can find out more about the week and upcoming events at www.scottishinterfaithweek.org
The theme for Scottish Interfaith Week 2018 and our launch event is ‘Connecting Generations’. The Scottish Government has designated 2018 as the year of young people and one of the main aims of the year is to develop better understanding, co-operation and respect between the generations. We recognise that faith communities, local and national organisations have an important role to play in providing opportunities for people of different generations to dialogue and engage in activities together.
At the launch, representatives from a variety of faith communities and organisations will illustrate ways in which they bring together people from different generations, and there will be music and dance performances by local people of all ages.
Please contact our administrator Else Kek by Monday 5th November if you wish to attend this event. Else can be emailed at admin@interfaithscotland.org or you can call the office on 0141 558 0778. A light vegetarian buffet supper will be served on arrival. Please inform Else if you have any specific dietary requirements.
You can also follow Scottish Interfaith Week on Facebook and twitter to find out more news and updates about the week. Please see details on the poster attached.
Dear Members, Associate Members and Friends of Interfaith Scotland – you are warmly invited to register for an inspiring Scottish Interfaith Week event - ‘Untold Stories: Women of Faith in the Suffragette Movement’ - to be held on 14th of November.  The venue for the evening is the Scottish Storytelling Centre, Royal Mile, Edinburgh and the evening will begin at 6 pm (6-9pm).  There will be guest speakers, time for dialogue and refreshments will be served.  To register attendance please contact Else on admin@interfaithscotland.org stating any additional requirements.  On registration a full programme will be sent to you.  Please feel free to circulate widely.
Will Aid is a special partnership between the legal profession and nine of the UK’s best-loved charities. Every November, participating solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic Will. Instead, they invite clients to make a voluntary donation to Will Aid – we suggest £95 for a single basic Will and £150 for a pair of basic ‘mirror’ Wills.
With Will Aid, everyone benefits. You get a professionally drawn-up Will and peace of mind, while the charities receive much-needed donations for their vital work.
