Health care communication expert visits Geraldton

Visiting Professor Jonathon Silverman, former Dean at the School of Clinical Medicine at Cambridge University, recently came to WACRH in Geraldton to present workshops to local health professionals on improving clinical communication skills. Read more

Rural student clinic helps paint a brighter future for stroke survivors

When local Geraldton resident Gordon Macleod suffered a major stroke three years ago, he could not have predicted how much his life would be affected. Read more

Fifty per cent of cardiovascular patients suffer from multiple diseases

New research led by WACRH researcher Dr Mohammad Akhtar Hussain has revealed that one in two patients admitted to hospital with a cardiovascular disease is suffering from multiple chronic medical conditions which required complex treatment. Read more
EDUCATION

Mount Magnet placements

WACRH students and staff were pleased to be part of the Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (Murchison Outreach) Child Health Day at Mount Magnet District High School earlier last month. Speech pathology, public  health, exercise physiology and physiotherapy students on placement worked with GRAMS staff to complete vision, ear, iron, skin and general health checks.

Pilbara Placements

Last month occupational therapy students John and Bethan from the University of Sunshine Coast commenced their 8 week placement with  WACRH  in Karratha. They will be  providing occupation therapy services to Yaandina Aged Care and Yaandina Home and Community Care Services (HACC). They are supervised by WACRH lecturer Ornissa Naidoo.
GRANTS AND AWARDS

PHAA Mentor of the Year Award

Congratulations to WACRH's Director Professor Sandra Thompson on winning the Public Health Association of Australia 2018 Mentor of the Year Award. The award recognises Sandy's dedication to the careers of future public health students, researchers and professionals over many years. Read more

Rural Health West Funding

WACRH was successful in gaining scholarship funding from Rural Health West to fund the travel and accommodation costs of eight allied health students to attend a rural placement with WACRH in the Pilbara. Sophie, a third year preventative health studies University of Notre Dame student, tells her placement story here. Read more

Scholarship boosts social work career

This year WACRH’s Community Engagement Project Officer Lenny Papertalk was granted a Health Workforce Scholarship Program and bursary payment through Rural Health West to undertake a Masters of Social Work through The University of Western Australia. She recently completed her 13 week practicum with Desert Blue Connect in Geraldton.  Read more
