Maryland: You already likely know the top-line decisions. Terps FB HC Durkin reinstated, AD Evans will continue to lead, Prez Loh will retire next June. The USM Board "did not solely blame Durkin for problematic behavior within his program and trust him to make things right." Loh says Evans is "one of the finest" ADs in the country. The Baltimore Sun's Dance, "Loh told regents he had reservations about allowing Durkin to return to the sidelines, but that the regents made it clear that Loh could either reinstate Durkin or be replaced with a university president who would." Loh, after the presser, "I've said all I needed to say." An independent monitor will be assigned to oversee athletics reforms handed down by the Board. (link); Here's full video of the presser. The first CFP rankings with Oregon AD Mullens as the new committee chair hit the airwaves. Alabama, Clemson, LSU & Notre Dame with Michigan & Georgia on the outskirts. Here's a transcript of the full post-presser with Mullens, points to LSU's six wins over teams with a .500+ record as why the Tigers were ahead of the Fighting Irish. Touches on UCF in his opening remarks & the Knights' lack of victories in the same category. More. Kansas MBB HC Self on the eligibility of student-athlete De Sousa, who is currently sitting due to his connection to the MBB-FBI developments, "No, unfortunately, and there's not going to be any news, I wouldn't think, in the immediate future. Without going into any details at all, I think everybody would understand it was very limited [in what could be shared] until the trial was officially over, and then after the trial everybody's got to be able to put everything together and look into whatever they look into. So we're hopeful his eligibility review is done as hastily as possible, but we also don't know the time-frame in which that will occur. […] I think the timeline is probably in the NCAA's hands far more than it is the University." (link); The Jayhawks won't release documents connected to its Adidas deal as the Lawrence Journal World pushes for access & clarity on $1.5M worth of royalties paid to KU last year. Arizona's Board of Regents will chat tomorrow to review the latest developments in the MBB-FBI situation that involve the Wildcats. The meeting is scheduled for 90 minutes & the board is not expected to take any immediate actions as a result of the discussion. (link)
The Big 12 announces Baylor has implemented all 105 recommendations of the Pepper Hamilton review & will again receive a full share of conference payouts. There's also news of a previous $2M fine handed down by the league to the Bears for "reputational damage to the conference and its members." $14.255M has been withheld from BU to date, minus $1.651M for legal fees with the remaining $12.6M invested over 48 months & net earnings split equally 10 ways every year. The funds are earmarked for "campus-wide and athletics prevention efforts focused on sexual and gender-based harassment and violence, intimate partner violence, and stalking, including, but not limited to, programming addressing healthy relationships, LGBTQ+ discrimination, and bystander awareness." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd gets more from UCF AD White just ahead of the first CFP rankings, "There's a whole bunch of people who want us to lose. You and I both know that's true. […] I think we're doing the same thing other teams would do with a 20-game winning streak. It's disappointing to see others trash that. It's almost like they're trying to put us in our place. […] This whole notion of Power Five being so different than all the other FBS teams, it's just not true. If we were to play 90 percent of the Power Five teams next week, we'd be favored probably significantly. […] I don't have a lot of patience for people that turn things nasty and negative." Big 12 Commish Bowlsby doesn't think UCF's resume should be looked at "cumulatively," (to include last year's undefeated season, too) but does think some of the pushback on the Knights could be politically driven. (link)
No financial terms were disclosed, but Penn & JMI landed a "multi-faceted" deal with global asset firm Macquarie Investment Management that will include naming rights to the court inside the Palestra. Macquarie will also be the presenting sponsor of Quakers hoops, premier sponsor of a youth initiative, presenting sponsor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day & presenting sponsor of the new student-athlete Community Champion program. Per an NCAA release, sounds like the tying of President/Chancellor contracts to sound athletic conduct may not be a full-go yet, "forum members expressed concern that language adopted by the Board of Directors in August calling for employment contracts to require that presidents cooperate with NCAA investigations may be unenforceable." With the WAC looking for new members, Dixie State (DII), located in St. George (UT), could be a prime contender as a Collegiate Consulting study found the Trailblazers are in a "strong position." Further, the study says Dixie State could "expect a invitation" from the WAC if it decides to make the jump. The Spectrum piece quotes DSU AD Boothe, who notes the WAC sought out the university, not the other way around, and notes that UMKC "is thinking about leaving the conference due to travel concerns." Boothe points to potential FCS Independent status for his FB program. (link)

Syracuse AD Wildhack selects USF Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Goodrich as his new Deputy AD/CMO. Head Coaches: Ohio State FB HC Meyer says severe headaches have impacted him this season, points to a congenital arachnoid cyst in his brain. In 2014, Meyer underwent brain surgery to reduce "intercranial pressure." Meyer: "Over the last few years, I’ve felt better and, with the help of my doctors, learned to manage it and monitor it with medication. I’m optimistic that this time won’t be any different." (link); USC FB HC Helton gets a boost of support from Trojans AD Swann, "No. 1 is I believe in Clay Helton. [...] And so I solidly stand behind Clay to move those things forward." (link)
Assistant Coaches: Three FB DCs will make more than $2M this season as USA Today's Berkowitz shines light on Auburn DC Steele's new three-year deal that began January 1, whereby he gets $1.8M in basic comp plus a $250K retention payment if he is employed at the conclusion of this season. Would be paid on a pro-rata basis if he is fired without cause before the SEC championship game. LSU's Aranda and Clemson's Venables are, of course, the other two. (link); Texas A&M still does not have signed contracts for a handful of FB ACs, including DC Elko, Linguist (DB), Craig (WR), Robinson (Interior DL) and Graham (RB). NMFishBowl's Libit dives in on "Unplugging the UNM Lobo Club Matrix," which reviews the state auditor's process of determining if the entity should be a 501(c)(3). Looks like there's a push by Lobos AD Nunez to bring the Lobo Club in house, plus a bit of confusion from Nunez on what exactly the Club should be covering of his own expenses, like his car insurance & gas. Further, former UNM AD Krebs was interested in jettisoning the Club "and having the UNM Foundation take over its development duties… when Krebs presented his plan to terminate the Lobo Club, he cited the need to reduce overhead, even though the UNM Foundation was shouldering much of that burden." Under Armour is showing some positive signs with its latest quarterly earnings exceeding Wall Street expectations. As a result, UA stock was up 25% yesterday (closed at $23.23). Founder/CEO Plank: "We’re certainly not declaring victory. But we’re proud of what we’ve done." UA Prez/COO Frisk: "Our playbook is working. We’re focused on managing the business for sustainable, long-term profitability." (link)
Athletic Directors: Cincinnati's Bohn notes the Bearcats still have $10M to raise for their $43M cut of the $93M renovation to Fifth Third Arena. The other $50M was bonded by the university. (link); South Dakota Deputy AD Williams praises Coyotes AD Herbster, "Whether it is a student he passes in the MUC or a fan at a game, he has the ability to make them feel important. He is one of the nicest people I know." Williams also contends no Summit League member has improved as much as USD over the last six years. One thing I didn't know: Herbster & Williams were interns at North Dakota State 23 years ago & lived together while starting their careers. Williams: "We work very well together, I think we play off each other’s strengths because we are similar in many ways." (link); Video lacks context, but here's Evansville AD Spencer telling a UE student & Men's Soccer supporter to "get the hell out," apparently in connection to the Aces matchup with Grand Canyon. Vermont's Board of Trustees gives the green light to a new $95M multipurpose athletics arena with construction that could start this Winter "if UVM meets fundraising goals and secures required permits." Completion in the 2020-21 timeframe. Catamounts AD Schulman: "This is not approval of a concept, this is not a vote of support for the idea. This is approval for us to move forward." (link); Changes in the federal tax code & the coming $65M changes to Foreman Field at Old Dominion lead the Monarchs to sell seat memberships, between $50 to $300 per ticket. ODU Assoc. AD for Development Turner: "If we did not separate payments made for the rights to purchase tickets from other gifts, it would make all donations non-deductible. And the only way we can operate is by requiring a seat membership for the ticket." The enhancement of Foreman will also come with a reseating process. (link)
Clemson voted at this month's BoT meeting to allow JMI Sports to explore using the university's trademarks in conjunction with a "drink responsibly alcohol related athletics sponsorship." Past radio spots with MillerCoors and Anheuser-Busch did not include visual marks from the Tigers. AD Radakovich: "I think in the collegiate landscape there are an awful lot of these partnerships at very fine institutions across the country. They have been done very well and very tastefully at other other institutions." He also pointed out that these explorations are "in no way a step toward selling alcohol in the stadium." Of note, the Clemson-JMI deal, which started in 2016, is for seven years, with $45M guaranteed in revenue from JMI before a revenue split kicks in. (link)
Western Kentucky is under OCR investigation after being accused of underfunding its softball program compared to baseball and discriminating against female athletes, but WKU General Counsel Wilkins denies as much: "Universities are not required to create 'mirror image' programs." The original complaint, which was never submitted to the university, was filed August 1, 2016 and states "I am seeking additional funds allocated to the softball program to be equivalent to the baseball program for field renovations, coaches salaries, on site locker rooms and coaches offices, and equality in scheduling for a 'shared' indoor hitting facility, and dollars spent per athlete." Wilkins: "WKU has provided OCR with all of the information it requested and we’re confident WKU is providing equivalent treatment, services and benefits to male student-athletes and female student-athletes. If disparities are identified, I expect these will be negligible and due to non-discriminatory factors." Wilkins does not believe the salary differences allocated for coaching staffs could be "sufficient" grounds for the complaint ($331K for baseball, compared to $143K for softball). (link)
SM2 CEO Cecil pens Halloween column for the Arizona Daily Star on how athletic stakeholders are straddling the line between supporting their athlete’s social media activism and how it may negatively impact their image and bottom line. Cecil provides four points to help guide civic leaders on sports teams and offers insights from higher-education attorney, Janet Judge, on diversity and the rise of women ADs. Judge: "Recent events remind us that finding opportunities to work and play side-by-side within a diverse population leads to a greater appreciation for difference and a fundamental understanding of those qualities that bind us to one another." (link)
