Guide to Colleges in Texas
Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio is pleased to share A Working Guide to Universities in Texas. A Working Guide to Universities in Texas is a digital booklet designed to help students and families make more informed decisions with regard to college planning. It includes easy-to-read profiles of 29 in-state universities as well as information about paying for college and factors to consider when choosing a school. It's college research, simplified.
Using better information to make decisions will produce better outcomes. A Working Guide to Universities in Texas enables students to make more informed decisions regarding their college-going future in order to maximize their prospects of college completion.

Community Event: Forced From Home
|
|
|
Doctors Without Borders presents Forced From Home, a free interactive tour that takes you behind the headlines about the global refugee crisis. Guided by experienced Doctors Without Borders aid workers, you’ll travel through a 10,000-square-foot space designed to convey the challenges facing a person forced to flee. You’ll also learn about the humanitarian aid we provide along the way.
Visitors experience virtual reality and 360˚ video, and interact with materials gathered from refugee camps, sea rescue missions, and emergency medical projects around the world.
Forced From Home tours are free, fully accessible, and take roughly one hour to complete. Families are welcome, however the content is best suited to children ages 12+.

Volunteering with Taking it to the Streets

We will be helping Taking it to the Streets feed the homeless downtown. Students 15 and younger must have at least one parent or guardian come with them. This is a religious organization, but they are welcoming of all backgrounds and religions and just want to help the community. Volunteers will provide food directly to the homeless population.
Mrs. Humphrey will be leading a caravan LEAVING at exactly 6pm from the back parking lot of Nimitz Middle School by the science building. You can also meet her there. There are 10 spots available.
Wear your SOS shirt, shorts or jeans, and comfortable shoes.

America Recycles Day Fall Festival

Volunteers needed for clean-up and tear down from 4:30pm - 6:30pm.
Students Offering Service is the school club affiliate of Summer of Service (SOS) at Nimitz MS. They will be hosting their annual America Recycles Day Fall Festival on Thursday, Nov. 15. There will be games, food, and prizes from 3:45 - 5:45. Most games and food cost $1, but there will also be free activities like face painting, crafts, and more! There are many chances to win gift cards, cupcakes, and more. The event is part of a national event to promote recycling to our community. They will also be hosting a recycling collection station for plastic, aluminum, metals, computers, and electronic equipment, and batteries. Everyone is welcome at this event!

During the holiday season, many senior citizens are alone and cannot afford to prepare a holiday meal for themselves. The Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner will give these citizens a place to enjoy a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings! We will be volunteering in the kitchen to help make this meal a success.

Japan America Society of SA Volunteering
Volunteer with JASSA and get SOS Hours
SOS will not have a site supervisor, volunteers will report directly to JASSA staff if they choose this event. Volunteers must be 15 and older.
Shifts Available:

- Sun Nov 25 6am-10am
- Sun Nov 25 10am-2pm
- Sun Nov 25 1:30p-5:30pm
All shifts will take place at the Mays Family Center Adjacent to the Witte Museum. There is free parking across the street at the corner of Groveland and Broadway in the open lot.
Shifts 1, 2 & 5 are strictly set-up (lifting, setting and arranging, etc); the event is not in session (yet).
Shifts 3, 4 will be during the event and will require attendance at an orientation the week of the event: time, date and location TBD.

Volunteering for trained volunteers only. If you have not been trained, there is a new volunteer orientation at the DoSeum every third Saturday of the month. You MUST attend one of these orientations before you can volunteer at the DoSeum. These shifts are not group events, but do count toward your SOS hours. You can schedule them at your own convenience.
