The Pedaler: November 2018

EVP's Column

November is always a great time of year for me. Since I’m often on the road for business, I know that my travel will be reduced this month. So, I’ll get to be home with my family. This month also has one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. I’m already looking forward to spending time with family and eating some great food!

Our club definitely has a lot to be thankful for as we go into 2019.  Membership is solid and it feels like we are getting the support we need from members for ride starting and special events. Of course, we can always use more support. If you have suggestions on anything, please let us know.

This year, we’ve seen the success of our strategy to leverage RideWithGPS.com for our routes and to move away from paper maps. RWGPS has enabled us to quickly respond to road issues by dynamically altering the routes just a day or two before the ride.  The feedback from members has been generally positive and we would like your feedback. If you haven’t downloaded the app to your smart phone, please do so. The process for gaining access to the maps via RWPS can be found here.

Since modifying a route is much easier to do through RWGPS, you should not download a specific route and assume that it will never change. I recommend that you download the latest version of a route's map a day or 2 before you plan to ride it.

The first edition of the Wheelmen 100 drew more registrations than the past 2 years of the Reading & Riding 100! Although we experienced rain on the day of the event, the feedback from participants was positive. Through this event, we were able to make a meaningful donation to Earn-a-Bike. I believe that we’ve found a great starting point and some great routes for future Wheelmen 100 events. We've got a great deal of work to do in order to provide a successful 2019 event and we will need your help.

November also means it’s time to begin the process of nominating and electing board members for the upcoming calendar year. As of today, we have identified a nominee for every position except Board Secretary. If you are interested in the role or know someone who might be, please contact me.

On November 15th, online voting will begin. You will receive an e-mail with a link for casting your vote for board members. Online voting will end on November 29th. If you don’t happen to vote during this period, you can vote in person during our holiday party on December 1st. We’ll announce the elected board members during the party.

Holiday Party

We have a new location for this year's holiday party. It will be held a Blanco BBQ on December 1st at 6 PM. The address is:

13259 Blanco Road
San Antonio, TX 78216

We’ve reserved a private meeting room for the event. The cost is $10 per person. RSVP is not needed. There will also be a very short business meeting to elect our 2019 board.

We hope to see you there!

Alternative SAW Jerseys

Earlier this year, we designed a black SAW jersey and put in a small order for the jersey. We've gotten a few inquiries about the jersey:

If you are interested in wearing one of these beauties, let us know. We need an order of 10 or more jerseys in order to hit a price range of $60-65.

We want your cycling photos!

Our weekend rides are fun and they usually put us in a great mood before, during, and after the ride. Often, we capture some great moments with our cameras. We’d love for you to share some of the photos that you take before, during, and after our rides! These photos showcase our passion for cycling and our involvement with the club. We’ll use them on our website, social media posts, and during our holiday party. If you have a photo that you’d like to share, please upload it to dropbox or send it to photos@sawheelmen.com.

Saturdays are Jersey Rides

We encourage all members to wear their club jerseys on all Saturday club rides. They look great and it’s an awesome sight when a large group goes out in our colors. Being a Wheelmen is something to be proud of so show your spirit.

Need a jersey?

Contact Jerry Hyndman at merchandise@sawheelmen.com and he’ll get you fixed up.
