Tell us a few details about you and your story.
Accidentally got into triathlons while training for the BP MS 150 bicycle race.  It all started while we finished about a 50 mile practice ride. My entire body hurt and the only thing I could think about was the “free” lunch that was waiting for me at the finish line.  As I was pulling in, I noticed people were dropping their bikes off and lacing up their running shoes.  My mind started asking questions: What are they doing?  Why are they about to start running after a 50+ mile bike ride?  Are they crazy?  Who are these people?  I was talking with some fellow cyclists over lunch and they explained that these people I saw lacing up their running shoes were triathletes that were most likely running as part of their brick workout.  My curiosity led me to getting into my first triathlon in 2015 and in 2017 I completed my first full Ironman at Ironman Texas.

How did you get involved with Team Catapult?
The first time I saw Catapult was while I was racing at Ironman Texas.  I was on the 2nd loop of the 3-loop run course and was starting to hit the mental wall.  Doubt started to set in and I began questioning whether I had the stamina to keep going.  Shortly thereafter, I caught a glimpse of a visually impaired athlete and a guide seamlessly trotting alongside me.  Watching them work as a team really inspired me to keep pushing.  I noticed they both were wearing Catapult kits so after the race I looked into the organization to see what they were all about.  After a couple months of rest after the ironman, I reached out to Catapult to get involved and began volunteering and guiding.  I’ve guided a few 5ks, 10ks and 1 half marathon so far.  Who knows, maybe one day I’ll have the opportunity to guide for Ironman Texas and make it full circle with Team Catapult.

What is your current role with Catapult?
I’ve guided, help set up and take down tents at race venues, provided swim support in a kayak, played the role of taxi driver, brought donuts and beer after races, and supported the team with any possible need.  I’ve guided for Brookwood trail run 10k, Houston’s 12k of Christmas, Houston Marathon’s ABB 5k, and the Houston Aramco Half Marathon.

What has been your most motivating moment?
I would say it wouldn’t be one moment, but collectively, all of the small moments.  Watching each and every one of our team members showcase their determination and mental grit is truly motivating.  It’s also motivating to see how our team comes together as one to provide support for each other. Whether it’s helping someone learn to swim for their first triathlon or lending a hand when someone has taken a hard fall.  Experiencing the unity of Team Catapult motivates me to not only be a better athlete, but a better person.

What is your funniest Catapult story?
Participating in Catapult Corner during Ironman Texas was an incredible experience with hilarious moments all day long. We love cheering on the athletes and have a fun time doing it!

What was your first impression of Team Catapult? Has that changed?
First impression was Team Catapult was an incredible organization.  No, every person has reaffirmed my first impression.  I’m so thankful to be a part of such a great organization and I’m beyond excited to see what the future holds for us.

Favorite (motivational) quote.
The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough.  -Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

2019 CATAPULT Gala, Benefiting Team CATAPULT

CATAPULT kindly requests your attendance at the 2019 CATAPULT Gala to be held on Friday, January 18, 2019, at The Astorian near Downtown Houston.  CATAPULT relies on several key partnerships to help achieve its mission goals, and the funds raised during the gala is the driving force behind annual events, training, scholarships, education, and community outreach programs.

Like last year, our gala will be the same weekend as the Houston Marathon with a similar schedule on Friday evening. In 2018 we were able to raise more than $130,000 gross funds for the organization with the help of partners, sponsors and friends like you. The money raised funded 100% of the organization’s events for 2018 and beyond, assisting athletes in reaching the finish line of endurance events 100+ times (and counting), and providing a race push rim and multiple prosthetic running blades for athletes. Finally, CATAPULT awarded more than  $28,000 in grants to 50+ CATAPULT athletes in need.

We are looking forward to even greater success at this year’s celebration. Our gala will be at The Astorian and will offer amazing downtown views, first-class dining, an open bar, along with an inspiring program from those who benefit from CATAPULT the most.   The goal is to support more athletes in 2019, raise awareness, and honor our partners, supporters and cheerleaders who make CATAPULT’s achievements possible.

If you are interested in reserving a table or seat at this year's gala please email us today at hello@teamcatapult.org to learn about table options and donor levels.  Space is limited. We hope you can join us for this special evening.
