1. Updates

(Remember Remember) 5th of November

Beat the Week 5 blues with our pioneering New Literacies Lecture! Dr Neave O'Clery will be talking on 'What drives the success of cities?' this Thursday! Leave that pesky formative essay at home and come along to what is set to be a fascinating lecture. Find more details below and on the event's Facebook page.

If you're just joining the Oxford Urbanists, find us on Facebook, Twitter, and on our Website.
We still have a lot of opportunities to work with us - all of which are suitable for Freshers and continuers alike - get involved! If you are have been on fieldwork or travelling, feel free to send in your pictures and work, and have it featured in our newsletter.

Spotlight on work by the Urbanist team

Thanks to everyone who came along to Will Conroy's talk last week on 'The Operative Commons'. It was great to hear some of Will's ideas and to be able to discuss and unpack many of them in greater detail.

The talk formed part of our Working Paper Series, which provides an environment for discussion and feedback on papers and research featuring urban issues, particularly those which are still being worked upon. It's a great opportunity for those of you who want to learn about or discuss urban issues, or if you have a paper in the works that you'd like to bounce off a friendly (and very interested!) crowd. Please get in touch if you'd be interested in sharing your work at a Working Paper Series event

2. Urbanist News around the World

  • What is green cake and why did this woman invent it? (BBC)
    • Possibly my favourite piece of urban news this week. Two Palestinian women have invented a new type of concrete block made, in large part, from ash and rubble. I also recommend articles from AlJazeera and other platforms on this story, but this is a video, and I thought we could all do with a video in Week 5.
  • Brewing up an urban revival in Porto Alegre (Americas Quarterly)
  • India is building a high-tech sustainable city from scratch (World Economic Forum)
    • ...and it sounds great. The city will be built n Andhra Pradesh to serve as the province's new capital city.
  • 9 Great Urban Ideas from Latin American Cities (Americas Quarterly)
    • Just nine great ideas for making cities safer, greener, happier places.
  • How cities, not states, can solve the world's biggest problems (World Economic Forum)
    • Despite its slightly alarmist claims about cities offering "humanity's most realistic hope of collective survival", this article features some interesting ideas on how cities can help to build a better future
  • New Vancouver condo tower on Robson Street will have separate lobby for social housing (Straight)
    • Segregation and stigmatisation of social housing residents in Vancouver
