Mapua Sprig & Fern 10k event report
27th October

Hello All Fellow Runners and Walkers

Disappointing weather conditions in Mapua greeted runners and walkers as they arrived for the last race of the season; the Waimea Harrier Mapua Sprig & Fern 10km Road Race.

Despite this, the scenic course was enjoyed by the 54 athletes who competed in the event. A fast time of 38:58 mins saw Kim Hogarth take out line honours, with Hayden Squance and Charlie Squance in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.  Colette Read was the fastest of the women, with Maryann Cant 2nd and Robyn Deane 3rd. Of the walkers, Don Bate was first home, closely followed by Peter Hague and in 3rd place, Alan West.  Tania Gardner was the first woman walker to cross the line, with Elaine Llewellin 2nd and Paddy Tarrant 3rd.

While the Harrier season has now officially finished, club members will not be hanging up their shoes any time soon, as there are races all through the summer. Apart from the Saturday ‘Pub Runs’, each Wednesday there are the 5km series races.  Today is the last race from the Turf Hotel and from November 7th, Waimea Harriers start their Eddyline 5k Series with full details on the website.

This Sunday is the long awaited Nelson Festival of Running, and we wish all competitors well for the 2.5, 5, 10km and half Marathon events.
