Midterm Election Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who participated in the History & Political Science Department’s survey last week. A total of 209 people responded — 83% said they are registered to vote, 82% said they know how/where to vote, and 81% said they plan to vote. The national average has been about 40% voter turnout in recent midterm elections. Election Day is Tuesday, November 6. Active participation in the election process is vital to a healthy democracy.
The most important issues to the respondents were: Healthcare (#1), Immigration (#2), The Economy (#3), and Climate Change/Environmental Protection (#4). For a basic overview of where the main Democratic and Republican candidates on the Tennessee ballot stand on these issues, please click here »»»

GALLERY OPENING: THE DEATH OF FEAR

The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery hosts an artists' reception for the joint exhibition, "The Death of Fear" with artworks by Sisavanh Phouthavong Houghton and Nelson Gutierrez, on Friday, November 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. "The Death of Fear" explores President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s concept of “Freedom from Fear” from the perspective of two artists who immigrated to the United States. Through methods of isolation, abstraction, and collage, each artist explores states of flux, the disconnection from destructive places or politics, and the fearless pursuit for a better life. The exhibition is in collaboration with For Freedoms, a platform for greater participation in the arts and in civil society that produces exhibitions, installations, public programs, and billboard campaigns to advocate for inclusive civic participation. RUMBLE IN THE FORUM RAFFLE
The Office of Recreation will host a raffle for 12 lucky winners to receive tickets to the Saturday, November 10 Memphis Grizzlies game vs. Philadelphia 76ers. Along with admission to the game, winners will have the opportunity to participate in the Fan Tunnel at 6:15 p.m. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. The raffle will be held on Monday and Tuesday ONLY in Alfonso Dining Hall during lunch. Each winner will receive two tickets. Winners will be contacted via text on Tuesday afternoon.

BRIDGE CLUB ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to an organizational meeting to form a CBU Bridge Club on Thursday, November 8 in the Thomas Center Conference Room, 2:00-4:30 p.m. Whether you are a beginner or a player returning to the game of bridge, please join in to form a club for the most popular card game of all time. AUDITIONS FOR MISTLETOE VARIETY SHOW

Come show off your talent, skill, and creativity! STARS is excited to announce its upcoming "Mistletoe Variety Show" that will be held on December 4 (see below in Upcoming Events). Auditions are being held on Thursday, November 8 and Tuesday, November 13 in the STARS Lounge (Rosa Deal 302). Please fill out this form to be eligible to audition (application deadline November 6!). All applicants will be emailed their audition time at least one day before their audition date. For any questions, please contact Kim Jameson at kim.jameson@cbu.edu.

BOWLING FOR UGANDA
Bowling for Uganda will be held on Friday, November 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Billy Hardwick's All Star Lanes (1576 S. White Station Rd.). Teams can have a maximum of five people, and the cost is $20 per person. Trophies will be given to the top three teams, top two male players, top two female players, and the team with the best name. Each team will be given a pizza and two-liter drink. During the event, a raffle will also be held — $1 tickets for the raffle will be sold in Alfonso Dining Hall all this week. Bowling for Uganda is an annual event hosted by Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society to raise money for the Ishaka Health Plan, a non-profit organization that strives to create accessible, quality, and affordable health services to the financially challenged people in 565 villages throughout Uganda through services such as consultations, births, malaria treatments, and preventative care conducted in the Ishaka Adventist Hospital.

MY FAVORITE FILM SERIES

The "My Favorite Film" series begins on Friday, November 9 in Spain Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. with a night showcasing SAC President Bennett Martin’ favorite film, Good Will Hunting! Kick back and relax and come learn why it’s Bennett’s favorite movie! Popcorn, candy, and drinks will be provided! Films to come in the series include the favorites of Wilson Phillips and Brother Tom Sullivan! Check "Upcoming Events" below to find out what they are!

The Catholic Student Association will host Avenue — a time for fellowship and spiritual reflection that is open to everyone — at 8:00 p.m. in Stritch Chapel on Sundays, November 4, November 11, and November 18.

Not your average, ordinary weekend.

Have an innovative technology idea for making Memphis a Smart City? You have two minutes on Friday, November 9, to pitch your concept and inspire the crowd at Start Co. (88 Union Ave.) beginning at 6:00 p.m. The most popular ideas will be selected and teams will form around them to work on them over the course of the weekend. There will be a live pitch competition Saturday afternoon for the pitches that weren’t selected on Friday if you want to receive tips on how to improve your pitches! On Sunday afternoon, each team will present its smart city tech business to the Memphis community and a panel of judges. Lots of prizes will be awarded, lots of fun will be had, lots of food and coffee will be consumed, and — in the end — these new startups will use data and technology to create efficiencies, improve sustainability, create economic development, and enhance quality of life factors for people living and working in Memphis. In Memoriam

Thomas (Tom) Arnold Blanchard Sr., husband of Deborah Blanchard (VP, Communications & Marketing), passed away on October 28, 2018 at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House after a short illness. He also leaves two sons, Tom Blanchard Jr. of Toronto and Sam Blanchard of Oakland, CA; a daughter, Kristinna Blanchard of Monroe, VA; three stepchildren, Robin M. Taylor of Memphis; Ryan Morehead of Boston; Drew Morehead of Albuquerque, NM; and three grandchildren. Please keep Deborah and Tom’s family in your thoughts and prayers. All services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the non-profit of the donor’s choice, or to The Ocean Conservancy or to the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House. Condolences may be sent in care of Campus Box 21 or online at the Memorial Park obituary.

Susan Carol Fuller, Executive Administrative Assistant in Athletics, passed away November 1 at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House after a short bout with liver cancer. She began her time at CBU in September 2002 and spent her entire 16 years in Athletics. The funeral service will be Monday, November 5 at 10:00 a.m., also at Memphis Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memphis Memory Gardens at 6444 Raleigh LaGrange Rd. Flower arrangements may be sent to Memphis Funeral Home. Please keep Susan and her family and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers. Condolences may be left online at Susan’s obituary.

CBU Alumni in the News

Alumni Mauricio Calvo (BSBA '97) and Yancy Villa-Calvo (BA '99, MBA '01, BFA '06) were profiled by David Waters in his "Faith Matters" column in The Commercial Appeal on November in an article entitled "Hopes and fears of new U.S. citizens and their U.S.-born kids." Both were born in Mexico but met at CBU and have been married for 17 years. Mauricio is executive director of Latino Memphis, and Yancy is a local artist whose acclaimed Barrier Free project is currently on exhibition at the University of Memphis Art Museum (and will be at CBU in March 2019); both became U.S. citizens in April.

Dan Wortham (VP, Administration & Finance, Retired) was honored by the Memphis Business Journal with its CFO of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. A 1971 CBU graduate, Wortham was VP/CFO at CBU from 2000 until his retirement in 2014. Previously, he was VP of Business Affairs at the Memphis College of Art. The award announcement and profile entitled "CFO of the Year Lifetime Achievement: The education of Dan Wortham" was published on October 31.

Soda Tab Drive

Attention all students, faculty and staff: Delta Sigma Pi is conducting its annual Tab Drive! This is put on to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charity. The goal is to collect soda can tabs from now until the end of the 2018-2019 school year, so be sure to help DSP by dropping your tabs in the designated buckets located in each school to encourage friendly competition! Attention Seniors & Graduate Students!

This is a friendly reminder that a graduation application is required in order for all degrees to be conferred. If you plan to graduate in DECEMBER, and you have not already completed a graduation application, you must do so immediately. Please be advised that the graduation application deadline for December graduates has passed, and those filing after the September 15 deadline will now be assessed a $50 late fee in addition to the $130 standard graduation fee.
For students anticipating graduation in May or August, the graduation application deadline is December 1. The $130 graduation fee is applied at the beginning of the semester in which graduation is anticipated. This application fee is applicable for one year. After this time, students who have not completed their degree requirements will be removed from the graduation list, and they must reapply for graduation, as well as repay the graduation fee. Those filing after the stated deadlines will be assessed a non-refundable late fee of $50.

Drop-In Tutoring

Drop-in tutoring is available at two new locations this semester! The School of Business now has a tutoring office in Buckman Hall 314 where you can walk in on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. or Tuesday/Thursday 4:00-6:00 p.m. Meet with an experienced Peer Tutor for help with your Core Business requirements like ECON 214, MIS 153, and ACCT 260, as well as many of your General Education requirements like MATH 105, SPCH 125, and ALG 120.
The new Student Success Center is located in Thomas Center 50, around the corner from the Bookstore. The Center is open all day to students, with drop-in tutoring scheduled in the evenings. Tutors are available to help you with most freshman- and sophomore-level courses, including General Education Requirements and Biology, Chemistry, Math, Physics, and Computer Science. Check the schedule in the Center for exact courses available. Fall 2018 hours are as follows: Monday through Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Fridays 3:00-5:00p.m., and Sundays 1:00-9:00 p.m.

Think Safety: Tips from Campus Police

STOW IT, DON'T SHOW IT (This isn’t just for the holidays)!

Always keep your valuables out of sight. Purses, backpacks, cell phones, and laptops, are frequently stolen from vehicles when items are left in plain sight. Stow items in the trunk or take them in your residence before leaving your vehicle unattended. Do you need to leave the classroom or your office for just a minute? Either have a friend or classmate watch your valuables while you step out of the room, or take them with you, if you cannot lock them in a desk. Remember, it only takes a few seconds to steal your belongings while you are away for just a minute!

The Mid-South Coalition for Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) program is now accepting applications for 2019! A Survey of Interest from Dr. Stan Eisen

This is a survey to find out whether there are CBU faculty and staff members who are willing to dispense advice on an ongoing basis on any subject. There is a group of retired individuals in Salt Lake City who have met at the same restaurant for years and have shared insights and stories for so long that they already know each others' stories. The restaurant owner had the brilliant idea of renting a tent at a local farmer's market so that these retirees (affectionately called Old Coots) could dispense their insight and wisdom to inquiring people. Thus, "Old Coots Giving Advice" was born.
At first, everyone thought that this would be perceived as a joke... until people started asking really serious questions.
THEREFORE, this survey is to inquire whether there are Old Coots (self-identified) at CBU who are willing to dispense advice to inquiring (and possibly naïve and unsuspecting) individuals. Snarky answers are acceptable, and to be quite honest, expected.
I propose that we institute this event next semester on a weekly basis. If you are interested, please contact me at seisen@cbu.edu.

BOOK RELEASE PARTY
CBU will host the Official Release Party for a new book by Candous S. Brown (English '07, MAT '12) entitled The Life of an Educator and the new publishing company, One Dove Ink, the creation of Reginald O. McCray (BSBA-Management '05) on December 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Sabbatini Lounge. Brown, a teacher in Shelby County Schools for the past 11 years, wrote The Life of an Educator as her story and a plan of action to educate the teachers of the future. Copies of the book can be pre-ordered at www.onedoveink.com for $20.00 and received signed by the author that night as well.

Buc Bulletin

MEN'S SOCCER (8-6-3, 7-1-3 GSC): The Lee Flames broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 66th minute, which was enough to edge the Christian Brothers University Bucs 1-0 Tuesday night in the GSC Quarterfinals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (8-7-2, 7-5-1 GSC): The Lady Bucs' soccer season came to a close at the hands of No. 2 West Florida Argonauts in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, 2-0 in the UWF Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL: (12-18, 3-11 GSC): The Lady Bucs won the first set, but visiting Union won the next three to claim a four-set 3-1 win Tuesday night at Canale Arena. Visiting Shorter took advantage of errors by the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs as they claimed a three-set win Friday at Canale Arena. The Lady Bucs ended their 2018 season with a four-set loss to Lee on Senior Night.

CROSS COUNTRY: Two CBU freshman cross country runners earned All-GSC honors as they led the Lady Bucs to a seventh-place finish in Saturday's GSC Championships. The Bucs finished 10th. Johanna Wistokat finished 15th of 97 runners in the women's 5k race, earning second-team All-GSC honors with her time of 18:51, which was fourth-fastest among freshmen. Chloe Willis finished 21st in 19:10, also earning second-team All-GSC. Willis was the sixth-fastest freshman in the race. Peter Torres paced the Bucs with an 8k time of 26:33, good for 32nd place. Jack Goodwin finished in 27:13, good for 51st place. The CBU cross country teams close out the 2018 season Saturday, Nov. 17, when they run in the NCAA South Regional in Lakeland, FL.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (0-0, 0-0 GSC): The University of Memphis converted 28 Christian Brothers University turnovers into 32 points as they claimed a 95-68 exhibition win over the Bucs Friday night at FedExForum. The Bucs travel to Wilburforce, OH for their first regular season game against Central State University on Friday, then bring the CSU Marauders back home for a rematch in Canale Arena on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Full schedule…
