Monthly News Blast
Dear Colleagues,

Programs and presentations offered this month in SSFD include opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty. On Wednesday, November 6, Professor Abby Ferber from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will present two workshops in the Sanford School. Graduate students are invited to attend “White Privilege from an Intersectional Perspective”; lunch is provided. Dr. Ferber will also present a workshop for faculty on “Dealing with Hostility in the Classroom and Beyond.”

SSFD is also sponsoring several opportunities for undergraduate students in the Sanford School who would like to get engaged in research. An information session is offered on Wednesday, November 14. Additionally, students who will be juniors or seniors in Fall of 2019 and are majoring or minoring in Family and Human Development or Sociology may be eligible to apply to the Sanford School’s Summer Undergraduate Program for Engaging with Research (SUPER), which is offered as part of the Diversity and Inclusion Science Initiative. See the story below for details, and note the application deadline is Friday, November 30, 2018.

Sincerely,
Marilyn Thompson

Hope Center debuts at ASU

Last month the Sanford School celebrated the official launch of the new Center for the Advanced Study of Practice of Hope (Hope Center). The festivities included special guests Antwone Fisher, whose personal story of hope inspired the film bearing his name starring Denzel Washington, Nancy Utley, Chairman, Fox Searchlight Pictures, and Valerie Calderon, who manages the Gallup Poll’s national student hope survey.

Sanford School Professor of Practice Richard Miller will direct the new center, along with Co-Director and School Director, Richard Fabes. The center will also be supported by a strong team of faculty and researchers from the Sanford School.

Beyond undergrad: Putting graduate school in reach for underrepresented students

Six rising juniors and seniors in the Sanford School participated last summer in the first annual Summer Undergraduate Program for Engaging with Research (SUPER). This program, led by co-chairs Manuela Jimenez and Casey Sechler, is an intensive six-week program designed to provide underrepresented students with hands-on research experience and guided professional development.

“I know without a doubt that I will continue to work hard and apply to PhD programs that interest me, because of what I learned through SUPER,” said Paul Espinoza a junior in the sociology program.

Applications for the 2019 SUPER program are due November 30, 2018. For further information on this program and how to apply, see the article and program webpage by following the links below.

Sarah Lindstrom Johnson was cited in Reuters article, “Some school security measures make kids feel less safe”

Schools that install a lot of indoor cameras may not be improving security while in fact making children feel less safe, a U.S. study suggests. Sarah Lindstrom Johnson, assistant professor from Arizona State University’s T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics, was recently interviewed for an article on school safety published by Reuters. “If we’re not careful in our efforts to
improve physical security of our schools, there may be an impact on students’ emotional safety,” Lindstrom Johnson said.

Leigh McLean
I am an Assistant Research Professor in SSFD and I earned my Ph. D. in the Psychology department here at ASU. I have lived in the Phoenix area for the past 6 years but am originally from Portland, Oregon. While I sometimes miss the rain, I absolutely love the desert, especially the hiking, swimming, and outdoor dining that come with the nice weather. I study how teachers’ personal characteristics, namely depression, anxiety, and burnout, affect the classroom environment and the students therein. I am currently leading a project taking place in local elementary schools investigating how teachers’ feelings and beliefs might differ across the subjects of math, science, and literacy, and whether these differences impact students’ achievement in these areas. While my main passion is conducting research, I do also love teaching and have especially enjoyed teaching SSFD’s Introduction to Parenting course. I really look forward to teaching this course in the Spring as I am a new parent myself!
