November 7, 2018

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Happy November!  It is hard to believe we are already on the cusp of the holiday season.  One of the things I love most about the month of November is the focus on gratitude.  There is so much research on the benefits of practicing gratitude on a regular basis and how it impacts our lives.  I know my personal goal for November is to be intentional in my practice of gratitude and to be sure to take time and give thanks for at least one person or encounter each day.  Part of practicing gratitude is letting others know when you are grateful for them. Today’s letter is framed with that goal in mind.

I am grateful to everyone who attended conferences last week and took the time to productively partner with teachers in order to best serve your children.  Thank you to each of you for the trust you give to us in educating your children.  I am grateful to our faculty and staff for all they do for the children at ASB and for all the effort they put into conferences at a particularly busy time of year.

I am grateful for our strong arts program and the teachers and staff who support the work of the arts.  On Monday, our students enjoyed a preview of our upcoming fall play, A Christmas Carol.  Our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade thespians have been working tirelessly along with our drama teacher, Julie Olsen, and countless parent volunteers.  The joy, energy, and work ethic they bring to this production represent their commitment to excellence in the arts.  Please show them your appreciation for their efforts by attending the fall play.  See the newsletter below to purchase tickets.

I am grateful to the many people supporting the capital campaign and building project.  I am especially grateful to the team who is working so hard to get this project off the ground – well, more specifically, shovels in the ground!  The Master Use Permit (MUP) was published and, as anticipated, we have a few appeals that have been filed.  Fr. Oliver, our land use attorneys, and I will attend the pre-hearing conference on November 13th in hopes that the appeals will be dismissed and we can start this much anticipated project. I am grateful to each of you for your patience, grateful for the continued contributions coming in, and grateful to the flexibility of our faculty and staff.

I am grateful to the continued generosity of this community.  It honestly never ceases to amaze me.  On Monday, our Student Leadership Team delivered over 50 bags of groceries and items to the parish food bank as a part of our regular free dress food drive.  That is incredible!  Next week, our first graders will be leading our annual cereal drive.  Thank you in advance for supporting their efforts.  I am so grateful for the continued focus on service and looking beyond ourselves to those in true need; these are pillars of ASB School.

I am grateful that November is a time in which our church focuses on remembering those who have gone on to be with God in their next life.  I have never been a fan of saying, “those who are no longer with us.”  Anyone who has lost someone knows they are always with us, shaping who we are and what we do through the impact they had in our lives. Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of my own father’s passing, and I can say there is not a day that goes by where I am not thinking of how he cared for his family, inspired those around him, and showed leadership and dignity in his interactions.  I am so grateful to be here at ASB, to be surrounded by traditions of compassion, excellence, and faith.

At our school All Saints’ Day mass last week, Fr. Oliver encouraged everyone to look for those saints in our daily lives – our parents, grandparents, teachers, siblings, friends, and more.  Recognizing the gifts people bring to us each day and how they make us better people is so important.  I wish you each the gift of gratitude as we go through this month and encourage you to take the time to pass that gratitude along to your family, friends, and community.

All my best,
Kathleen

Cereal Drive!
What first grader doesn’t like cereal?  What is more important than helping others? As part of ASB’s ongoing commitment to community service, the first grade will be collecting breakfast cereal for the Assumption Parish Food Bank. The first graders have asked the entire school community to be a part of the cereal collection.
We will be collecting boxes November 13th -16th. We appreciate your help in anyway!

Soccer News:
The 2018 ASB Soccer season has come to a close, thank you so much to all of the parents, coaches, and players that made for a successful CYO Soccer season.

CYO Championships!

The 6th Grade boys and girls teams played for the 6th Grade CYO CHAMPIONSHIPS this past weekend at Kennedy Catholic High School. Both teams played amazing games, with great effort and sportsmanship.  Both the boys and girls teams fell one goal short of their opponents, and ended up finishing 2nd in the 6th grade division of CYO Soccer.  A huge CONGRATULATIONS to both of these teams.

Soccer coaches and parents, please email soccer pictures of your team to Mrs. Caballero!  These pictures will be used in the ASB yearbook. Equipment and uniform returns will begin next week, each coach will be contacted by Emily Childress or Lincoln Davis with instructions on the returning of equipment.

Parents DO NOT send you soccer uniforms into the school.  These need to be returned to the head coaches of your child's soccer team.

Basketball News:
Basketball teams have been finalized, we had the ASB coaches meeting Monday night, and teams will begin practicing this week. If you have not already been contacted by your coach, they will be contacting you in the next week to relay practice and team information to your family.  Good luck with the season.
