OutCasting Update
November 2018

Hi, folks —

Headlines this past week have been dominated by the pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats and the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre.  The actual perpetrators, of course, must be brought to justice.  But it is difficult to ignore the connection between acts like these, allegedly perpetrated by home-grown American right wing terrorists, and the environment of legitimized hate created by President Trump.  This puts all minorities, including LGBTQ people, at increased risk.  OutCasters Dhruv and Lucas consider this connection in this month's OutCasting Overtime.

On OutCasting, we continue our exploration of the medical and ethical considerations involved when transgender youth want to physically transition.  Our guests are again Dr. John Steever, a physician, and Dr. Matthew Oransky, a psychologist.  Both doctors work at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and spoke with OutCaster Lauren, now in college.  Listen here.

For the past year, we've featured our youth participants as OutCasters of the Month, but this month, we realized that everyone currently involved had already been profiled.  So we sent Lucas and Dhruv into the studio to see what they could come up with, and the result was the first edition of the OutCasting Ga[y]me Show, in which they quiz each other about LGBTQ topics in a light-hearted way.  This was recorded before the terrible recent events, but we hope you'll enjoy it as something to help you end the week on a happier note.

It's been a busy year here at OutCasting and I'll talk more about that next month.  But briefly, we've set the stage for significant growth on the operational side of OutCasting, and we need to build the organizational side to support this growth.  This will involve increasing our budget to support a conversion from volunteer to paid staffing, finding new board members, getting a newly organized group of OutCasting parents into action (we're having our first meeting on Sunday!), and more.

We hope that you consider OutCasting to be a vehicle for the good you accomplish in the world through your philanthropy and that you'll consider making a generous gift of financial support to Media for the Public Good, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit that produces OutCasting and related programming.  We also hope that you'll keep in mind our effort to expand our board of directors and try to think of people you know personally or professionally who might be a good fit.  Learn more here.

Thanks for your interest and support, as always!   Talk with you again next month.
