DBS NEWSLETTER

2nd November 2018

From Mark McVeigh, Principal

Dear DBS Parents,

Our DBS students came back on Monday from the half term break, with a renewed energy. It was terrific to see enthusiastic students throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the life of the School, refreshed after their well-earned rest.

Just before 8.00am this morning, students (and the parents present at the time) were treated to a piercing sound: that of visitor Ross Jennings playing the bagpipes. I taught Ross, aka ‘The First Piper’, when he was in Y9 at Marlborough College, where he discovered his love for the pipes. He has set himself the goal of playing the bagpipes in every country in the world. He gave a highly motivating talk to the Prep School with inspirational messages for the students about seizing the opportunities presented to them, the importance of perseverance and going for their dreams.

Mr Lyng’s Assembly continued this theme of daring to dream, as he spoke to the students about the explorers Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci. They were risk takers on a grand scale, and entrepreneurs too, seeking funding for ultimately lucrative voyages.

There have been many examples of student successes this week, including the students who represented DBS at the Maths competition at the International Pioneers School today, coming away with four cups. Ik in Y6 and Imp in Y4 won their age categories in the ACEP Swimming Championships. Baibua and Baiploo won their categories in the Yamaha Thailand Music Festival.

Finally, I hope that you will all complete our parents’ survey. It is vital that parents let us know what they think. While I am on the subject of parental suggestions and/or concerns, please address these to my office, Mr Lyng or Mrs Skinner, if you feel it is not appropriate to raise them with the class teacher or form tutor.

I wish you an enjoyable weekend with your family.

Best regards,

Mark McVeigh
Principal
Denla British School, Bangkok

Mrs Higgins has been incredibly proud of the hard work and determination demonstrated by all of the students at the Maths Competition today. They were superb ambassadors of DBS. We were rewarded with medals in the individual rounds and trophies in the team rounds. Well done Team DBS!

Students (and parents making the early morning drop off) were treated to the sounds and experiences of Ross OC Jennings, aka 'The First Piper'. Ross talked to the students about 'breaking stereotypes'. In his interactive seminar, he shared information about Scotland, Bagpipes, Kilts and key messages that he has learnt from his travels all over the world (you're never alone, make mistakes, be ambitious etc). However, his key underlying message was that you can do what you want if you set your mind to it!

The children in the Jellyfish class have been enjoying playing, in their role play pizzeria. This week, we have made our own pizzas to use as props to support our play. They look good enough to eat!

In ‘Make It’ Club this week the children had a magical time making potions!

In Y2 Science, we practised classifying living and non-living things.  We examined real and toy insects using a magnifying glass.  We also did a nature walk to search for things that are alive, dead, and have never been alive.

This week in Y5 Humanities, students created their own plays based on Pharaoh Tutankamun's discovery in Egypt. Characters included famous archaeologists Howard Carter and Lord Carnavon, and theY5 students played these roles brilliantly.
In Geography lessons in Y8, students have been learning all about overpopulation. They transported themselves 100 years into the future, and became news reporters, where they reported on overpopulation, and how damaging this global issue can be.
Our new Science Lab Preparation room is now ready! Teachers and LAs will use this facility to prepare materials for experiments, for Y5 - Y8 students.
Congratulations go to Baibua and Baiploo. On 26th October, Baibua won the gold prize in the Yamaha Thailand Music Festival 2019 Piano Solo Under 12, and will have the final competition round in May 2019. On the same day, Baiploo won the First Prize in the Category A Piano Solo under 10, in the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) Churairat Piano Competition 2018. Well done to you both and we wish Baibua success in the final round.
Congratulations go to Ik in Y6 and Imp in Y4, who were very successful at the ACEP Swimming Championship 2018. Ik was ranked 2nd overall in the U11 boys' category. Imp was ranked 3rd overall in the U9 boys' category. Fantastic swimming Ik and Imp. Well done!
