Peace talks with artist David Ray

6pm Thursday, November 22
Artspace Mackay

Artspace Mackay’s artist-in-residence, David Ray wants you to share your ideas and opinions about Peace. So bring your friends and join him at the gallery for peace talks - a free group discussion with an opportunity to express what Peace means to you.

David believes “the majority of people are good natured and well-meaning, yet those sentiments are rarely expressed in today’s media”. The ideas generated in these discussions will be incorporated into his site-specific mural for The Wall titled ‘I come in peace, take me to your leader’. We’ll look to the future - contemplating what our next generations might face in terms of creating and maintaining Peace.

David Ray is a ceramic artist from the Yarra Valley who has a reputation for creating wild and flamboyant work. He is an Artspace Mackay artist-in-residence producing a site-specific artwork for The Wall over a two week period in November. This is a great opportunity for people in our community to see and even collaborate with an accomplished Australian artist.

Visual Thinking Strategies

3.30pm (3.45pm start) the last Thursday of every month.
Artspace Mackay
RSVP: 4961 9722 / billie-jo.ogilvie@mackay.qld.gov.au

What’s going on in this picture?.. There are no wrong answers when it comes to Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) delivery. VTS is about looking at art, considering what we see, then putting what we see into words. It’s not an art history lesson, it’s a method of teaching that empowers the learner, strengthening oral communication, visual literacy and creative and analytical skills.

Whether you’re an experienced educator, or just someone with a love of art, language and social interaction, our VTS practise sessions are for you! You can begin by simply participating as an audience member, and over time, you might like to join the rest of us as we practise delivering VTS sessions ourselves. Come along and try it, it’s free - but let us know you’re coming so we have a chair for you.

Artspace Mackay
Exhibition opening: 6pm Friday, November 30, RSVP: 4961 9722

Gerry Wedd enjoys a national reputation in Australia for his hand-built blue and white ceramics that brim with a dry wit oscillating from the humorous to darkly disturbing. From his beginnings at the kitchen table, guided by his mother’s hobby-obsession through to formal training at University of South Australia and his studio tenancy at JamFactory, Wedd draws his craft out of his own inspirations, interest and experiences.

Kitschen Man will also feature works from an ever-changing personal collection of inspirations, work made by family, friends, colleagues and mentors such as Jo Crawford, Peter Johnson, Philip Hart, Lesa Farrant, Lincoln Kirby Bell, Chris Headley, Toni Warburton and Stephen Benwell.

Jewellery Workshop: Rejuvenate your bling

> 10am - 3pm Saturday 8 December
> 10am - 3pm Sunday 9 December
The Workshop Room, Artspace Mackay

Wondering what to do with your old, preloved, sentimental or broken jewellery? Those pieces sitting in the back of the drawer that you never wear but can’t bear to throw out? This one day workshop will unleash your creative side as you are guided by artist and teacher Melissa Larsen to rejuvenate your Bling.

You bring the ‘jewels’- your preloved and no longer worn or cherished jewellery and Melissa will provide tools, accessories and creative approaches needed to help you create your new one off works. Share laughs, trinkets and creative encouragement. You’ll feel a great sense of achievement and add new additions (with special memories) to your wardrobe! This workshop is tried, tested and great fun. Participants are encouraged to share their bits and bobs…one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

Please note…this is not a beading workshop. We work with leather, chain, rope… anything out of the box goes!

Book now $25 (Gallery Members) or $30 (non-members) 4961 9722.

LAST WEEKS:
On yer bike

FIELD Engineers Gallery
Until November 25, 2018

Don’t miss this incredibly popular exhibition, on show only until November 25. We wash them, we polish them. Sometimes we even name them. But above all, we ride them. Mackay has a long and rich history of motorcycling from the sand racing on the Northern Beaches in the 1920s to the speedway at the Showgrounds at its peak in the 1970s.

The tradition of collecting and restoring is alive and well in Mackay and On yer bike provides an opportunity to view not only an eclectic mix of motorcycles but also to learn the stories of local motorcyclists - stories of ingenuity, courage and daring.

I come in peace, take me to your leader: David Ray

Foyer Gallery, Artspace Mackay
Exhibition opening: 6pm Friday, November 30, RSVP 4961 9722

An Artspace Mackay initiative, The Wall is an Artist in Residence exhibition program that offers Australian artists an opportunity to create an artwork directly onto the wall within the gallery. David Ray is a ceramic artist based in the Yarra Valley whose work provides wry commentary on contemporary consumerism and the less celebrated aspects of Australian cultural life. His work often explores the complex relationship between beauty and ugliness, and defies conventional making techniques.

Exhibition dates: 30 November 2018 to 17 March 2019.

Speed Date the Collection

5:45pm (6pm start) - 7.15pm
Thursday, December 13
Artspace Mackay
RSVP: 4961 9722

Our informal Speed Date the Collection night is an opportunity for the community to ‘meet’ artists’ books from the Collection in an informal and fun way. In a social context participants can become familiar with the rich resource of artists’ books held in the Mackay Regional Council Art Collection.

How it works: Six artists’ books, six staff or volunteers and ten minutes to experience an initial spark of interest, attraction and connection to an artwork - or not as the case may be! Following standard speed dating rules, participants rotate to meet each artists’ book over a series of short "dates" lasting around ten minutes. Participants have one-on-one ‘conversations’ for a limited time with the trained presenter and then move on when requested to the next artists’ book.

Free to attend, bookings essential.
