In their own words: stories of service 1914-18
The eighth book in our Century of Service series is Candour — Stories in the words of those who served 1914–18. More than 330,000 Australians served overseas during World War I. Each person who served has a story. Some never had the chance to tell that story. Those who did told it in their own unique way. This publication shares stories told by Australian men and women who served in the war. The stories are told largely in their own words, through diaries, postcards and letters. We sent a copy of Candour to each school in our Remembrance Day mail-out. You can download a copy from our site.

Great Debates: The Anzac Legend
This resource is designed for the Year 9 Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). Students can investigate the different attitudes of Australians toward the Anzac legend over the past century. Engage and educate younger teenagers on aspects of Australia’s political and wartime history.

Plan your Remembrance Day Service
At the 11th hour of the 11th month, Australians pause to reflect on the sacrifices of Australian service men and women. This year marks 100 years since the end of World War I, which involved some 416,000 people from Australia. Our 2018 Remembrance Day posters feature four portraits of Australians who served at Gallipoli in 1915. Each portrait was created by combining hundreds of portraits of men and women who have served in our defence forces over the past century. We sent the poster to every school in Australia so teachers can speak to their students about the meaning of Remembrance Day.

Veterans Story
Norman Lee was born in Perth in 1929. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy and served Australia in the Korean War. During the war, he was on board HMAS Sydney during Typhoon Ruth in 1951. After the war, Norman stayed in the navy and rose to the rank of Commodore. Watch our video interview and hear Norman’s story

Anzac Day Schools’ Awards
Congratulations to the winners, runners-up and special category winners of the 2018 Anzac Day Schools’ Awards. Thank you to all the teachers and students who entered. The judges were impressed with the commitment from schools to commemorate Anzac Day in their local community. We loved seeing so many entries that involved veterans and current serving members of the Australian Defence Force. The winners are published on our site.
