In this issue:
Dental X-rays

As with most things in veterinary medicine the improvements in patient care just keep on coming.
At Highfield we have recently installed a new dental x-ray machine.
  • 60% of the tooth lies under the gum and can only be evaluated by x-ray
  • A dental x-ray allows us to assess not only the tooth but also the root, bone and other adjacent structures
  • Simply removing the visible tartar is only doing half the job.
How do you think yor pets teeth rate?
Take the simple test below and if your pet doesn't score well, give us a call.
Pet Dental Scoring
New  Kidney Test
Up until recently the tests we have been relying on to diagnose kidney failure didn't flag a problem until about 75% of the kidney function was gone.
We now have a new in-clinic test called SDMA that can detect kidney failure when there is the loss of only 25% of the kidney function. This obviously means that we can start preventative treatment (such as dietary change and medication) much earlier leading to a much improved quality of life and life expectancy for your pets.
We are already incorporating this test in many of our pre-anaesthetic tests.
We have had a number of interesting results whereby and animal appeared fine from the results of the old testing parameters but the SDMA indicated that in fact the animal was in early kidney failure and steps were then taken to slow the progression of the condition down.

Things just keep getting better for the health of your pets!
Hayleys' Hints
Time to say goodbye!
Your first port of call at Highfield over the past few years has probably been Hayley. Unfortunately (for us!) Hayley is moving on to bigger and better things, shifting to Christchurch and taking up a position with a major veterinary wholesaler. Hayley will be greatly missed as she is an absolute encyclopedia of veterinary knowledge and always a smiley friendly face who somehow always seems to remember your name, your pets name, what food it eats and any medical problems it may have had and where you went for your holiday earlier in the year!
We still have a heap of experience at reception though! Kate will continue her job as Customer Liaison Representative and many of you may have already noticed that Anna is back. Anna was our receptionist prior to Hayley but left to have children. She now has time to come back with the kids being a bit older and has fallen straight back into the position.
We would all like to wish Hayley the best for her new position and thank her for everything she has done for our clients, their animals and Aorangi Vets.
We haven't heard the last of Hayley though. We will be in daily contact with her as she takes our orders!
Ask Anna
Time for a new segment!
I am sure many of you have things about your pets that have you wondering.
  • How do you stop your cat peeing inside?
  • What should I feed my old dog?
  • How often should I worm my puppy?
If you have, why not email the question to Anna and she will try and answer it for you
