Yesterday Jair Bolsonaro, an outspokenly racist, sexist, and homophobic fixture of the far right, was elected President of Brazil.
It is a stunning turn from former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a champion of the working class who was favored to win again in 2018—until he was arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of “passive corruption.”
What occasioned the rise of fascism in Brazil? Can the most vulnerable there survive a Bolsonaro presidency? Will Lula be vindicated?
