Trick or Treat

Hello, Friend.

It's trick or treat time for so many of us. And we're here to let you know we're all about TREATS — there’s no trickery in sight.

September and October have been uber busy for us. We have more than 8,000 students using 5 Radical Minutes now! Teacher and student surveys are flooding in, and we're eager to share the results with you in the coming weeks.

And because you're one of our favorite people, this newsletter includes a few tools for your loot stash.

Resources for Suicide Prevention

One of the topics we get asked about the most is suicide prevention. Below you'll find free tools and resources to help in your discussions, whether you're a parent, teacher, or community member.

The Thought Process that Leads to Suicide

This web page walks you through the stairsteps of passing thoughts of suicide to the rehearsal of a plan, and the implementation of that plan.

Suicide Warning Signs, Myths and Truths

Learn the warning signs, myths and truths about suicide. This PDF is suitable to share with staff, students, parents, and community members.

This video serves as a starting place for parents, teachers and community members for those difficult conversations with youth after someone dies by suicide.

For Parents and Grandparents

If you’re a parent or grandparent and want some more ways to connect with the kids in your life, consider 5 Radical Minutes for Families. Your monthly subscription provides 3 conversation starters every single week, which allow you and your children to connect on a deeper level on an ongoing basis.

If you don’t live near your children or grandchildren, we recommend FaceTime, Skype, or Zoom for these sharing times. There’s nothing more important than building these social emotional relationships, and technology makes it possible even if you’re across globe from one another.

Thoughts on Screen Addiction

We're currently working on some resources that address screen addiction. In the process of building those, we've found quite a few articles and videos.

Screen time is a detriment to the healthy development of the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that contributes to empathy, relationships, and trust.

One of our favorite videos on screen addition is by Simon Sinek, and we've included it below. Enjoy!
We're also dropping roots in a few other places. All of these experiences are about building communities that experience greater kindness, connection, and resilience. Stay tuned — we'll be sharing the details soon!

Just for Smiles

Since part of our program is all about having fun together, we're signing off with a smile. And prowling cat dragons, prancing chia pets, and creeping ghostly turtles...
Friend, have a safe and happy Halloween. May all the ghosts and goblins you meet be friendly and wise. We wish you a fearless week!
