October 2018

It’s nearly Halloween and Election Day looms. Whatever your costume, or whichever angels and ghouls you choose to vote for, make sure you get your ballot in. If you’re feeling anxious about the results, join your fellow citizens in the Market’s Atrium Kitchen on Nov. 6 for a free piece of “Election Day” cake from the kitchen’s chefs from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Hey, there’s always a good reason to eat free cake!

Notable Birthday

And speaking of cake, Happy Birthday wishes to FOM advisory board member, public historian, and writer Paul Dorpat, whose 80th birthday is Oct. 28. Paul is celebrating this milestone with the launch of his new book, Seattle Now and Then: The Historic Hundred, created with his longtime collaborator, photographer Jean Sherrard. The duo will speak at Folio, the library in the Market Economy Building on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. Books will be available for signing and purchase. More information is available on the Folio website

New PDA Director of Operations

Some of you longtime Market folks may know Brady Morrison, a key member of the team that keeps the Market running. A former plumber and fix-anything mechanic, Brady has been promoted to Director of Operations for the PDA. This good-natured soul is a true advocate and proponent of the community. If you know Brady, give him your “congrats” the next time you pass him on the cobblestones.

Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition

One more piece of Market news - the Pike Market Senior Center and Food Bank is gearing up for its annual Figgy Pudding caroling competition benefiting the organization on Friday, Dec. 7. This year, the center is asking for small sponsorships from Market vendors, to help boost the community around the senior center within the Market. If you love to sing, would like to volunteer or otherwise get involved, click here.

2018 Annual Meeting Invite

Please join us on Monday, Nov. 12, 5-6:45pm, at the Pink Door restaurant, for FOM’s annual meeting and election of Board of Directors.  Mary Bacarella,  PDA’s Executive Director and guest speaker, will speak on the topic, “Pike Place Market: Then, Now and the Future.”  All members, as well as friends and family, are welcome!

Hearty thanks to Jackie Roberts, Pink Door owner and longtime Market advocate, for hosting the meeting.

Advocacy Report

Feeling like you’re ready to get more involved in helping to preserve the Historic District? The Advocacy Committee is open to all FOM members. Over June-September, the committee advocated on behalf of three major proposals affecting the Market:  to replace the Hahn Building; to replace the Showbox theater with a 44-story building on the east side of 1st Avenue;  and to remove the totem poles from Victor Steinbrueck Park.

The committee continues to monitor the 1st Avenue Streetcar situation, but no decisions have been made on restarting that project at this time. The Hahn Building replacement process has also had little activity during this period.

Thank you to the Advocacy Committee for your tireless dedication on behalf of the Market and the surrounding neighborhood!

Until next month,

Emily
