OGC Named Most Innovative Legal Team in Asia-Pacific by the Financial Times

ADB’s Office of the General Counsel won The Most Innovative Legal Team Award at the Financial Times Innovative Lawyers Awards 2018 for its efficient and dynamic operations support and the Law and Policy Reform work. In ceremonies held last 7 June in Hong Kong, the Financial Times (FT) noted as one of the bases for the award the work in helping establish green benches in South and South East Asia.

Walk the Talk: A Sustainable Workshop for Bhutan’s Judiciary
On 19-20 July 2018, the Workshop on Environmental Adjudication for the Judiciary of Bhutan was held in the capital Thimphu. ADB’s Office of the General Counsel organized the event, in partnership with UN Environment and the US Environmental Protection Agency. Over 50 judges and court officers from the High Court and all districts courts completed the interactive workshop.
 
Climate Change: Let’s Talk About The Role of Courts
On 7 and 8 June 2018, the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL, National University of Singapore) co-hosted a climate change litigation scholarship workshop with Yale Law School.

ADB Joins Forces with the UN Special Rapporteur to promote Environmental Rights and Climate Justice in the Asia-Pacific Region
Together with the UN Special Rapporteur on Environment and Human Rights, ADB organized The Asia Pacific Judicial Colloquium on Climate Change: Using Constitutions to Advance Environmental Rights and Achieve Climate Justice. Held on 26-27 February in Lahore, the event assembled over 300 international judges, lawyers, and other legal stakeholders to discuss the role of constitutions and the judiciary in advancing environmental rights and climate justice. Other partners included UN Environment, the Lahore High Court, the Punjab Judicial Academy, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, the World Commission on Environmental Law, the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment, and Widener University Delaware Law School (USA). Bhutan Judges Get a Boost from a Workshop on Environmental Adjudication
Bhutan Chief Justice Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk and BHRM CD Kanokpan Lao-Araya opened the Workshop on Environmental Adjudication on 18 July in Thimphu. Over 50 judges and court officers nationwide completed the interactive workshop on 19-20 July. Topics discussed include climate change adjudication, developing special rules, and handling special evidence. UN Environment, US Environmental Protection Agency, and OGC jointly organized the event. Union Supreme Court of Myanmar to Host First International Conference with ADB support
The Union Supreme Court of Myanmar, led by Hon. Chief Justice Htun Htun Oo, and supported by OGC and UN Environment, will be hosting the Asia Pacific Judicial Conference on Environmental and Climate Change Adjudication, to be held in Nay Pyi Taw on 29-30 October. This Conference will be hosted under the banner of the Asian Judges Network on Environment (AJNE) and is a continuation of the annual gathering and roundtable of ASEAN and SAARC Chief Justices, senior Judges, legal and multi-disciplinary experts, and environment and climate change advocates, which began in 2011. This year, for the first time, judges from South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and from around the world will gather to discuss the environmental and climate change challenges that the world faces today.
