One of the most versatile and best-respected DJs and producers in underground electronic music, we are delighted to welcome Mumdance to our roster.
Since his earliest releases nearly a decade ago, Mumdance has continually plotted coordinates across the vast, undulating map of UK dance music - expertly navigating shifts in tempo, genre and style to lead forward with a sound that could only be considered his own.
His intuitive and ultra-versatile DJing was memorably celebrated when inducted as an instalment in Resident Advisor’s Art of DJing feature. Most recently he has ploughed a new path in techno environments, playing Berghain, DeSchool, Katharsis and more. Known for consistently recharging the possibilities of sound system music on now-legendary UK labels such as XL Recordings, The Death of Rave, and Tectonic, working at the forefront of independent grime with artists such as Novelist, scouring the fringes of experimental music with The Sprawl and recontextualising the hardcore continuum on the boundary-pushing label and event series he runs with Logos, Different Circles. Mumdance’s sheer versatility and naturally experimental mindset speaks for itself to crowd after crowd.
Never has this been more clear than on Shared Meanings. Dropping on the 20 November 2018 as a free digital mix, a DJ friendly compilation, collectors’ cassette and 12” vinyl sampler, the recording finds Mumdance blending together over 90 minutes of unreleased & exclusive music from fellow outsider figures across our shared musical space. By linking Caterina Barbieri to Sleeparchive, Nkisi to JK Flesh, Chevel to Peder Mannerfelt alongside dozens of other futurist forgings, Shared Meanings highlights the infinite possibilities of modern electronic music - it's a mix that oscillates in a 3D environment, following on from the legacy of his pioneering Different Circles mixes, and the lasting impact of his vintage Fabriclive contribution in 2015. You can hear the lead track from Shared Meanings - Teachers by Mumdance + Logos premiering on Mixmag now.
Mumdance's relentless curiosity also drives his Radio Mumdance project. Initiated on Rinse, and now on NTS, the regular radio show has seen him broadcast B2B sessions with underground music’s most talented selectors and producers, including Nina Kraviz, DJ Stingray, DJ Storm, Surgeon, Ben UFO, Josey Rebelle, Regis, Speedy J, Tropic of Cancer and many others. A recent radio highlight was a b2b in Berlin with Prequel Tapes: 8 Best DJ Mixes of September (Pitchfork)
As dance and electronic music continues to break, bend and evolve in all manner of unpredictable ways, Mumdance continues to find new ways to prove his worth to the scene.
