LMC Family and Community Newsletter
October 29th - November 2nd, 2018
  • Throughout the year, look here for shout outs and appreciations for our community members!  Or even better, send a shout out of your own to be published in the weekly newsletter.  Submit your shout out by emailing it to Kelly McGuire - kmcguire@lmc896.org
  • Shout out to Pam K for leading the charge on our social media campaign.  Have you seen Facebook lately!?  Pam is making sure that all of the amazing work happening at LMC is shared with our broader community.
  • Shout out to all the parents who donated cookies, cakes, brownies, chips, pretzels, and more!  Our middle schoolers had a great time during their sugar filled party thanks to you!
  • Finally a HUGE shout out to Lana T for finalizing this year's LMC School Directory.  Please use it to find contact info for kids at LMC and their families.
  • A shout out to all who have donated to the direct appeal!  We are so appreciative of your work to help make LMC a special place for all kids.
Wishing Wall….. what is that?  The Wishing Wall is a virtual wall covered with teacher wish lists for the parents to fulfill. The lists contain items that the teachers would love to have to enhance their classrooms and enrich the experience for their students. For parents, it’s a chance to support specific teachers and provide things that will directly impact their child's classrooms. This also includes support for specialty teachers, the guidance counselor and speech therapists!

Please CLICK HERE to learn more about it.
HERE is the list of the teacher's wishes.

Dear LMC Families,

Many parents have asked how their children performed on start of the year, baseline (MOSL) assessments in English / Humanities, Math, and Science.  These scores are now posted in your child's Jumprope, online grading system.  There are a few things you should keep in mind when reviewing these scores:
  • The content of these assessments is built around end of year learning standards.  Many students do not perform well on these baseline assessments because the standard at which they are graded is based on what they should be able to do by the end of this school year.  Do not worry about a low score on this baseline assessment.
  • The scores for these baseline assessments are not figured into your child's grade. They are shared so that you can have an understanding of how they are performing right now in relation to grade level, Common Core learning standards in the content area.
  • In late January we will conduct a second, mid-year version of these standards.  The content and format will be similar and the assessments will be evaluated in a similar way.  The scores for these mid-year assessments will be a part of your child's grade.
  • The goal for these assessments is growth, with all students making significant progress by the end of the year.  A level 3 on these assessments is considered to be "at grade level", but most assessment components are based on a total of 4 to allow for us to see where students are performing above grade level standards.
MOSL assessment scores are a significant focus for our our March Parent-Teacher-Student conferences, for by that time of year we should be seeing significant growth in student performance.

Best,
Kelly McGuire

AND ALSO!

All parents are invited to attend our first author visit of the school year.  National Book Award winner,  Thanhha Lai, will visit LMC on Friday, November 2nd at 9am.  She will share her personal journey as she and her family escaped Vietnam, lived in a refugee camp, and eventually made it to the United States. Our 8th graders are studying the book and this time in history, as well as writing their own poetry centered on their coming of age.  If you or your child would like a copy of the book for Ms. Lai to autograph please sign your name to this form and we will make sure to set aside copies for you.

AND!

The first LMC dance of the year was a success, but Halloween is actually on Wednesday!  Yes, students can wear costumes to school that day, but just a reminder of the costume guidelines:
  1. Kids can wear costumes during the day if they are not a distraction to others.  A giant pumpkin head for example.
  2. Blood, goop, or other messy products are not permitted
  3. Fake weapons of any kind are not permitted
  4. No masks during the school day, but they are fine to wear during the dance.
  5. Normally hats / hoods are not permitted at school, but this is just fine on Friday
  6. All other LMC dress code rules apply:  no drugs / alcohol / discriminatory messages, clothing should cover body parts.

Can you help?
Here are some things we could use this week:
  • ARE YOU AN ARCHITECT?  LMC is seeking to post a banner / flag on the outside of our doorway on New Street and we need your help filing a permit to do  so.  If this is an area you know or have expertise we'd greatly appreciate your support.  Please email Nicki Francis at nicki@khushispa.com if you can help.
  • Our teachers meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for adult learning and collaboration.  We meet until just about 4pm and in those hours following dismissal teachers get hungry!  If you'd like to help, sending in a little snack for our teachers on those days is always appreciated!
