Climate: the urgency to act
Appeal to world leaders
In a powerful statement, leaders of the Catholic Church called Heads of States to take ambitious and immediate action on climate change to prove a milestone in the path set out in 2015 in Paris ahead of the UN climate change conference in Poland (COP24). The call echoes the findings of CIDSE's latest report "Setting Sail for a New Paradigm" released ahead of the IPCC report on global warming of 1.5°C.

Pressure growing for a UN binding Treaty
CIDSE for human rights
The 4th session of the OEIGWG was a milestone in advancing negotiations for the elaboration of an international legally binding instrument on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rigths. 94 States participated in the session along with over 300 representatives from civil society. Many proclaimed their support for the Treaty process, as did Church actors.

Acting to transform our relationship with nature
New resources on systemic change
The online report of the first CIDSE Systemic Change Forum held last April in Leuven/ Belgium with over 90 representatives of CIDSE members, allies and partners is now available. We elaborated 7 key suggestions to move towards systemic change. The purpose is to explain systemic change simply and visually and to invite readers to engage in a discussion with colleagues, family or friends.

  • Thematic Social Forum on mining and the extractivist economy: CIDSE is supporting the organisation of this event and will be present in Johannesburg. (12-15/11/2018)
  • CIDSE-GCCM webinar on sustainable lifestyles for journalists. (19/11/2018 - 16.30 GMT: Save the Date!)
  • Vulnerable Climate Forum virtual summit: CIDSE will run the session “Urgent Call For A New Development Paradigm That Works For People And Planet”. (22/11/2018)
  • UN climate change conference (COP24): CIDSE activities will focus on climate, agriculture, energy and finance issues and will include a side event on the Paris Agreement 1.5°C long term goal objective. (Katowice, 03-14/12/2018).
  • Mobilisation: as part of the campaign “Change for the Planet – Care for the People”, a delegation of 100 volunteers from CIDSE member organisations will travel to Katowice. (06-10/12/2018). The campaign is happy to announce the launch of a new website early November.
  • The new CIDSE documentary “Energy to change” will be launched in December. (07/12/2018)

OTHER NEWS
  • Final declaration of the meeting with communities affected by mining, co-organised by the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), Iglesias y Minería, CIDSE and CELAM. (Brasilia,07-10/08/2018) (ENES)
  • MISEREOR, Adveniat, CIDSE and COMECE organised high level meetings with EU officials for a delegation of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network, REPAM as well as a public debate. (Brussels, 20/09/2018)
  • In the run up to COP24, CIDSE members, eRko, Focsiv, KOO and MISEREOR, joined the Climate Pilgrimage initiative led by the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM).
  • CIDSE’s work on agroecology, case studies by MISEREOR and practical experiences with agroeocological transition in the Philippines by MASIPAG were presented at an informal meeting with representatives from the European Commission and the European Parliament. (Brussels, 09/10/2018)
  • Together with CAN-E and Act Alliance-EU, CIDSE co-organised a round table on EU climate finance at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Patrizia Toia, where the results of a study commissioned from ODI on current levels of EU finance to energy access and renewable energy projects were presented. (Brussels, 09/10/2018)
  • CIDSE was invited to organise and facilitate a three-day gender training at the MIJARC World General Assembly meeting. The training was based on CAFOD’s “Believe in Change” toolkit. (Antwerp, 9-11/10/2018)
  • CIDSE celebrated the canonization of Archbishop Óscar Romero. (Rome, 14/10/2018)
  • 4th session of the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group (OEIGWG) on Transnational Corporations and other Business Enterprises with respect to human rights: overview of CIDSE’s delegation activities and oral statements. (Geneva, 15-19/10/2019)
  • A CIDSE delegation attended the Civil Society Mechanism meeting prior to the 45th Session of the World Committee on Food Security (Rome, 13-14 and 15-19/10).  On World Food Day, the Global Network for the Right to Food and Nutrition – of which CIDSE is a member – published its latest Nutrition Watch report “When Food Becomes Immaterial - Confronting the Digital Age”.   • CIDSE took part in the conference on Catholic teaching and climate change “Creatio Continua” organised by GCCM and the Pontifical University of John Paul II. (Krakow, 19-20/10).

  • The Secretariat paid farewell to Heidi Höök, Policy Officer for Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territory who left for new professional challenges. Her replacement, Frederick Swinnen, will take up his new functions on 5 November.
  • On 3rd October, the Secretariat welcomed Agnieszka Burda, a Polish consultant based in Katowice, who will help with COP24 preparations.
  • CIDSE Secretary General, Josianne Gauthier, was elected to the board of Climate Action Network-Europe. (24/10/2018)
