Hello friends of innovation!

Providing food for the world’s ever-growing population remains one of the biggest challenges of today and it is therefore also an SDG (number 2, zero hunger). Apart from the quantity of food needed, other issues make a solution even more complicated. Urbanisation, lack of fresh water and the environment require new directions.
In this newsletter, we will explore how automation could help. And as always, other suggestions or additions are welcome!

Robot farm

Producing food far from where it is consumed is far from sustainable. The closer to the plate, the better, that is what the people behind IronOx believe. Their solution is a fully autonomous farm that produces 30 times more food than on a traditional farm using less than 90% water. This should result in cheap, high-quality food with a minimal environmental impact.

Robot warehouse

Food from city farms still needs to be delivered to either a shop or home. An increasing problem in cities, however, is congestion caused by delivery trucks. CommonSense Robotics developed a “small” automated warehouse where local delivery companies can pick-up all orders for one address making “the last mile” much more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Robot delivery

This last mile could be covered by an autonomous delivery robot like the one from Starship. This might look futuristic, but these little pods are being used in real life already.

And finally, once delivered, a robot can take over the kitchen and cook a meal. The only thing left for humans in this process is the eating.

Everything connected

A bit off topic, but these are too nice to keep from you. These nifty little devices are cloud-connected motors. They are called Smartians and can turn “old” devices like a pick-up player into connected devices. And the design is beautiful too.
