Michigan State Prez Engler sounds off on the $10K fine handed down by the Big Ten to the Spartans in connection to the pre-game FB drama with Michigan. Needless to say, Engler disagrees with the fine, says B1G CEOs have given Commish Delany "god-like authority." More Engler, "I was told— and I haven’t been around very long — that down at the Big Ten headquarters, the scarlet and gray (Ohio State) and the maize and blue (Michigan) have a little status. And it sure looked like it this week. […] This has come from on high and there is no appeal. It’s just (Delany) responding to the public coverage of the incident. He might as well have just said, 'Tut tut and go.' I think it is one of the dumbest decisions that I’ve seen. And I haven’t seen many decisions, but I’ve watched over the years. But how is this possibly justified, other than the fact the game was held in Spartan Stadium? It’s like a penalty because we had the home field." (link)
The attorney for former Arizona MBB AC Richardson comments on the outcome for the three defendants in Lower Manhattan, "The current state of play in college basketball is that any violation of NCAA rules is likely a federal criminal violation. Book and I are very troubled by that. However, we believe only limited context about the environment in which the coaches and sneaker executives operated in was provided to the jury. We will evaluate our options accordingly." Richardson will go on trial for soliciting bribes & fraud, which is different than the wire fraud & conspiracy faced by Gatto/Code/Dawkins. Atlanta-based lawyer on NCAA matters Brown looks down the road, "My suspicion is that the information coming out of the trial is reasonable enough to prompt the NCAA staff to investigate. But I also think that some level of credence and corroboration is important before you take away somebody’s livelihood and impugn their character. I don’t think … some stories relayed by witnesses, even if they’re under oath, that that by itself is enough for the committee on infractions to find a violation occurred." More. (link)
Eastern Michigan Prez Smith indicates that if Softball & Women's Tennis are reinstated they'll have to compete for at least a year as an independent. Smith: "(Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher) was somewhat vilified by the plaintiff's attorneys for saying that 'I can't ask the other MAC teams to redo their busing schedules, to redo their hotel accommodation schedules for Eastern Michigan.' If Eastern comes back and plays a sport or two sports, or whatever it might be, they're going to have to compete for this year as an independent. They've set their schedules." Smith goes on to point to the importance of Compliance oversight to make sure the Eagles maintain Title IX balance if the two sports return to the EMU portfolio. (link)

Out in Arizona, the Fiesta Bowl has contributed $1M to teachers around the state in form of 200 $5,000 grants. Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Nealy: "The money, the receipts that we end up netting out of those games is a big part of what funds being able to give back to teachers like this." It's the largest grant the bowl has ever doled out. (link)

Southern was the powerhouse of HBCU FB 20 years ago, routinely ranking in the top five of I-AA attendance. Last night's home game with Jackson State marked the 86th consecutive home game since the program's last complete sellout in 2000, though 20,575 did show up. Prior home games this season against Langston (DII) and Alcorn State drew 12,379 and 19,412, respectively. However, for the first time in a decade season ticket sales are improving, up to 6,022 this season, 350 better than last and 450 more than the 2016 season. Jags AD Banks points to modernizing the ticket-selling process & a database of customers that's been built up to 17K. Banks has also led tailgating upgrades & improved communication with alumni groups. (link)
UCF fans attended ESPN College GameDay in Jacksonville like promised, Worldwide Leader analyst Corso commented on a cutout head of show peer Herbstreit wearing a Knights National Championship hat, "Oh yeah, that’s UCF. They’re fun guys. They’re good guys. We like them a lot. They got jokes." Herbstreit went on say UCF should forego home non-conference opportunities to play any 'Power 5' opponent anywhere, like Boise State did back in the BCS days. Analyst Howard: "Congratulations. You guys are undefeated. Keep up the good work, but the strength of schedule is an issue." (link)
The makeup of New Mexico's Board of Regents is in for a change & the winner of the governor's race will have the ability to appoint five of the seven members of the board because of expiring term timelines. Democratic governor candidate Grisham has already said she will push for reinstatement of the recently announced cut sport programs for the Lobos. Republican Pearce has yet to position himself on either side of the debate. There's also the possibility of the new governor asking for the resignation of the other two board members and starting completely fresh with a whole new leadership group. Lots more. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz details FB HC bonuses earned yesterday. Cash for bowl eligibility includes $35K for FIU's Davis, same for Boise's Harsin, at least $200K for Penn State's Franklin, at least $75K for Virginia boss Mendenhall, $25K for Louisiana Tech's Holtz, $25K for West Virginia's Holgorsen & at least $172K for Utah's Whittingham. Other stacks: Kentucky's Stoops up to $250K & an auto one-year extension, Fresno's Tedford has earned the same additions, as well. North Texas' Littrell up to $55K, Kansas' Beaty up to $250K, Clemson's Swinney at least $50K. (link)
The Wall Street Journal's Pinker pens on research around the importance for all adults to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night, no more and no less. "When we habitually stint on those hours, higher-order cognitive processing—such as the ability to see complex patterns and solve problems—is compromised." Sleep deprivation does not alter reasoning or verbal skills, but affects short-term memory. Regularly sleeping too little is more damaging than one or two bad nights. "Getting four hours of sleep or less for an extended period is equivalent to adding eight years to one’s age when it comes to test performance, the study shows—a significant decline. But a single good night can repair some of the damage." Conclusion: "So if you want to be articulate, solve a pesky problem, parallel park or organize an effective team—or even your closet—you’ll definitely need that nightly 7-8 hours of sleep." (link)

Prior to yesterday's FB win over Texas A&M, Mississippi State AD Cohen sat down to chat about his tenure leading the Bulldogs. Cohen continues to point to Florida AD Stricklin, Alabama boss Byrne & Kentucky AD Barnhart as super quality mentors who showed him how to get things done the right way from the chair, "but before you're in the chair you really don't know what it's like." Cohen goes on to point to a learning curve on the ins & outs of construction projects, managing a $100M budget & making sure every single student-athlete got treated the right way, admits he still doesn't have it all figured out. More on specific sport programs in Starkville. (link)
