The email we received from ToiToi said, 'Thank you for sending us your students' work for Issue 14.  We admire their curiosity, courage and creativity and feel very privileged that they would like to publish their art in Toitoi.'
We look forward to seeing their art work published next year.

Primary Athletics Sports Day
Tuesday 6th November was Primary Athletics Day at Coromandel Area School.  The sun shone and fun was had by all.

Kia Ora Koutou,

I am very pleased to announce that we have completed all of our selections for new secondary teachers for 2019.  The list of applicants who applied was long, and of high calibre. It wasn’t an easy decision for any of the positions, but we feel we have made three amazing appointments, that will bring added value to our kura.
Max Graimes will be our new Science teacher.  He is a young teacher, who comes to us from Long Bay College. His degree is in Biology and Marine Science, and he has a passion for Environmental Science.  He has also taught up to Level 2 NCEA Mathematics. Max has already started developing units that get students studying & experiencing our amazing environment.  He will move to the Coromandel with his wife and one year old daughter.
Chris Long will be our new Maths teacher.  He has been teaching at Taumarunui High School for the last 8 years, as Head of Science & Head of Outdoor Education.  However, his strengths are in Physics & mathematics, and he will bring a wealth of knowledge across various learning areas, to this role.  Chris is also a SCUBA Divemaster & instructor, and volunteer St Johns Ambulance officer. He will move to the Coromandel with his wife.
Laraine Heaslip will be our new Humanities teacher.  She won’t be a new name to some parents as she has been living in this community through 2018 whilst on a study sabbatical, and she has been volunteering once a week in Room 7.  Laraine has been working at Fraser High School for the past 13 years, teaching English, Classical Studies, Tourism, Social Studies, and more recently as Head of Textiles Technology.  Laraine also brings a wealth of experience across different learning areas, and is looking to develop project based learning throughout her courses. She will continue to live in our town with her partner.
Due to the appointment of Chris Long, it means we will be saying farewell at the end of this year to Mr David Phillip, our current Maths teacher, who has given many years of service and commitment to this school.  However, David won’t be a stranger to us, as he will only be a phone call away when relief teachers are needed. He won’t get away that easily!
In two weeks time, we will be appointing two new primary teachers, and with the calibre of applicants that have already applied, I have high hopes for two amazing appointments to be made in this area of the school also.
2019 promises to be a fantastic year, with some new faces here to join our whanau of brilliant teachers that we already have.  Coromandel Area School is EPIC!
I look forward to the last few weeks of school, with all the fun and excitement they bring in the countdown to the summer holidays and xmas.  However, it is really important that the students maintain a high level of behaviour and make positive choices both in and out of the classroom.  We are tightening down on some ‘silly’ behaviour that has been creeping in this term, and the message going to the students is clear: look after each other, respect yourself, your friends and your teachers, and do the right thing.  I know that these same messages will be repeated at home. Let’s work together to make this an enjoyable, safe and happy end to 2018.

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa,

Koren Hopoi

Seasons
Teia-Marie,Room 7

A tree dances in our yard.
In Summer
It's a green wave of colour.
In Autumn
It's a golden storm.
In Winter
It's a white carpet of snow on the dead tree.
In Spring
It's a burst of life.
A tree flowers in our yard.

Forest Fire
by Mikayla, Room 7

She is the daughter of mahueka, truly furious and determined to wreck everything in her way!
She burns things for a living.
She ruins everything she can.
She's unstoppable.
Her eyes are fiery red.
Her dress is wavy like flames.
Some people call her the fire princess.
Most people say shes stalking the earth.
Her skin is like a sunburnt sky.
She burns like there's no tomorrow.

The Cat was a ...
by Rehua,Room 7

The cat was a killing machine
In the light of dawn.

The spider is a thief slowly
Lowering himself on a rope.

The moon is a grain of sand
On a black beach.

The sun is a pebble on a
Black road.

Tui
by Paige Brown

The sun reflects off your velvety feathers as you drink the sweet nectar you make me lift off the groud, you are my power - so soar.
As you fight off the darkness and thunder inside me, you are my protector and hope.
You save me from the firey pit.
You are my super power!

I Have a Super Power

Apologies for missing the last newsletter, the time is just flying by so quickly, so this report is extra long.
We are now in Term 4 of 2018!  It's great to be back with all our tamariki.
Our tamariki spent Week One finding out what our new theme and catchphrase are for the term.  They participated in a relay race.  In their formation lines, each person (one at a time) had to run to the other end of the room where a line of hula hoops were laid out on the ground with a pile of puzzle pieces. Each person needed to pick up one puzzle piece at a time and put it in the closest hoop.  They then ran back to their team to tag the next person in line who would then do the same.  Once they had all the pieces, they then attempted to put their puzzles together ONLY to discover there were pieces missing - those sneaky Kiwi Can leaders!  The Kiwi can leaders then gave each formation line a clue to where they would find these pieces and the kids had to work together in their teams to hunt for the last two pieces somewhere in the school.
Our new theme is Integrity - this is about doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
Our catchphrase is 'The time is always right to do what's right.'
We spent Week Two learning about making good choices.  The junior classes listened to the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  We then had a discussion about the choices Goldilocks made and what she should have done instead.
Our senior classes participated in a temptation and conscience activity.  Three students sat in front of the class, the Kiwi Can leaders gave them different scenarios and the person sitting in the middle had to make a decision.  The person on their right was to act as their conscience and the person on their left to act as temptation.  Their conscience would try to persuade them to do the right thing while temptation tried to persuade them to do the wrong thing.  After listening to both sides, the person in the middle needed to make their decision and explain why they had decided to go with that choice.
Week Three we continued with our making good choices module with role plays.  Students were given real life scenarios that they needed to act out and then,as a class, we would discuss the bad choices that were made and how they could have handled the situation better. An example - stopping and thinking before making a bad choice and thinking about how the bad choice could affect you in the future, asking yourself 'would my parents / teacher be proud of me?'
We have spent Week Four talking about accountability.  The juniors learnt about how to have a Kandoo attitude. Having a kandoo attitude means we can make excellent choices.  It also teaches us how to be accountable and responsible for the choices we make.  Our senior students have been learning that we are responsible for saying 'No' to poor choices and that even if we follow others, we are still responsible for our own behaviour. We have done this through role plays.

Until next time from the Kiwi Can Team.
