MBB-FBI: ESPN's Outside the Lines finds former agent Dawkins made 13 phone calls in mid-2017 to a cell phone number associated with Arizona HC Miller & nine more to one connected to Creighton's McDermott. OTL got the records from evidentiary files of the recently decided case in Lower Manhattan. There's also calls to LSU HC Wade & ACs at Louisville, DePaul, Creighton, Arizona, Oregon & Western Kentucky. Statements yesterday from both the Wildcats & Bluejays indicate a continued monitoring situation of the developments with no further comment. More. (link); ESPN analyst Fraschilla: "This article reminded that even though I didn’t cheat when I coached, I had to talk to these street hustlers ALL THE TIME. We all did. I’ll reserve judgement on these coaches/schools until all the evidence is turned over to NCAA." (link); Stadium's Goodman: "I’m betting every coach who was recruiting Bowen spoke to Dawkins through the process." (link)
Looks like U.S. District Court Judge Wilken has denied the NCAA's push for an "offer a proof" of new witness testimony in the Alston case. Presumably lots more behind the Law360 paywall. (link)
Florida State has received a $20M gift from Al and Judy Dunlap to support the construction of a $60M FB-only facility that is scheduled to open July 2021. With this newest gift, FSU is nearly halfway to its $100M Unconquered Campaign goal to upgrade several athletics facilities, including Dick Howser Stadium, the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course, the Coyle Moore Athletic Center, and the Tucker Civic Center. Despite having no prior ties to FSU, the Dunlaps have given more than $40M to the university in the past 25 years to support initiatives in both athletics and academics. Al Dunlap: "I was a poor inner-city kid. My dad worked in the shipyard, mom at the five and dime. We didn’t have anything. My mom said, ‘You’re going to go to college.’ I said, ‘How am I going to go to college? We don’t have any money.’ She said, ‘You’re going to work hard in the classroom and work hard on the athletic field.’ I graduated from West Point and I thought athletics and education were so important. What you learn on the athletic field, applied to life, will make you successful." (link)
Connecticut AD Benedict is working to set up an early season, multi-team event in New York that would pit the " Old Big East vs. New Big East" in a slate of MBB tips. While logistics are still in the contemplative phase, Benedict envisions one venue but could see the need for two if enough schools elect to participate. "Last year at the PK 80 (Phil Knight Invitational in Portland) it was unique with two venues side by side. Could you do Madison Square Garden and Barclays (or Prudential Center in Newark)? Yeah. They’re close enough. Atlantis, Maui, we’re going to Charleston, there are a lot of different MTE locations, but a lot of times you’re not drawing huge crowds. The unique thing about what I’m talking to you about is you’d fill the place up. You’re not getting 2,500 people.” One short-term problem Benedict acknowledges is that most schools have already settled on their schedules for the next few years "so this is a five- or six-year plan that you've got to put together." As to whether the Old Big East vs. New Big East format is repeatable, Benedict says there would "have to be money involved," adding: "Look, I didn’t just come up with this. You hear people talking, longing for the old days of the Big East. Well, we have the opportunity to decide what MTEs we want to play in. I can’t believe all those schools wouldn’t be interested.” (link)
Current George Washington AD Vogel & former Colonials boss Nero discuss key notes on the topic of risk management with AthleticDirectorU. The pair also cover ground on building a positive relationship between SWA & AD, as well as instilling a culture where student-athletes have a voice. Vogel: "When a student-athlete comes in to express a concern, the first thing we ask is, 'Have you talked to your coach about this?' Their answer helps determine what comes next. […] You have to have a process when it comes to risk management because saying, ‘I didn’t know how to deal with this’ is not an answer." Nero: "Reporting structure is very important. The ability to get to the truth is a lot easier if it is something that happened last week as opposed to something that may have happened two years ago." More. (link)

The editorial board of the Diamondback, Maryland's student newspaper, has called for the ousting of Prez Loh, AD Evans and FB HC Durkin, choosing, as the board puts it, not to engage in a "semantic dispute over the definition of the word 'toxic'" and instead focusing on the report's other contents. For one, the board cites players' reluctance to report the abusive behavior of strength and conditioning coach HC Court because "they viewed Coaches Court and Durkin  as 'the same person.'" In addition, the Diamondback board contends that former AD Anderson and current AD Evans were "wrapped up in a childish and longstanding personal dispute that prevented either of them from providing effective oversight of Durkin and Court." As for Loh, the board posits that he "ignored serious warning signs about Durkin and Court's behavior" even when he was made aware of potential abusive patterns. "Regardless of whether this fact-pattern meets Merriam-Webster’s definition of toxicity, it undeniably describes a total system failure. ... A total system failure requires a complete overhaul. So long as Durkin, Evans and Loh remain in their positions, this university cannot repair this profound and well-deserved injury to its reputation." (link)
An update for those of you interested in the Idaho State AD opening, the university has contracted with ad agency Mitchell Palmer on a $975K statewide marketing and advertising campaign to elevate the university's profile and strategically tell the school's story. Most of money will be used for purchasing and placing advertisements. ISU spokesman Summers: "We hear people say ISU is the best school and that it’s this best-kept secret. We don’t want to be a secret anymore. We want everybody in the state to know that ISU is here and we are ready to make a difference. We want to be loud.” Since arriving on campus in June, Prez Satterlee says the most common refrain he's heard from ISU constituents is that the school's story isn't being told. "We have a lot of great things going for us as a university and community. We are doing great things. But often, few people know about them.” In the past, the university has relied mainly on press releases, websites, blogs and social media channels to market itself, spending roughly $30-40K per year. Now, according to Satterlee, that will change, and ISU wants to hear from its stakeholders in a series of listening sessions to chart the best way forward. "The people who work here and live here are a part of who we are. I want to make sure we utilize that knowledge, that institutional memory and wisdom of the people who have been here.” (link)
Judge Daniel Moreno on Friday granted Minnesota-Duluth's request to dismiss a sexual orientation discrimination lawsuit brought by former UMD coaches Miller, Banford and Wiles. In his ruling, Moreno asserted that the statute of limitations had expired and that the coaches should've filed as soon as they were aware of potential damages. Senior Assoc. General Counsel Pramas: "We are pleased that the judge granted our motion and dismissed all of the claim the plaintiffs filed in state court. With respect to the federal case, at the appropriate time we plan to file post-trial motions seeking to either set aside the verdict or for a new trial, or in the alternative to reduce the amount of the jury's verdict." Miller was awarded $3.8M by a jury in a federal lawsuit earlier this year. The plaintiffs have 60 days to appeal the ruling. (link)
More Personnel: UNLV AD Reed-Francois after the Rebels FB loss at San Jose State on Saturday: "It’s a disappointing loss. We have four games left. We’ll review everything top to bottom after those four games. Right now my job is to support this football program and that’s what we’re going to do. These young men deserve that ... Just like I do with every single head coach at the end of their season, we get together and we review holistically and we address what needs to be addressed." (link); Jackson State does not renew the three-year/$265K annual salary contract for FB HC Hughes, which was set to expire Dec. 12. DC Hendrick will serve as interim for the Tigers' remaining five games. Hughes went 9-20 overall and 8-12 in the SWAC. (link)
Texas & Penn subject matter experts Caporale-Berkowitz & Friedman write for Harvard Business Review on the importance of peer coaching in the workplace to combat feelings of isolation & loneliness of employees. What is peer coaching? "Cultivating a network of allies that can provide mutual support in creating positive change to improve performance." Benefits: 1) Creates a culture that values connection; 2) Replaces social snacking with meaningful dialogue; and, 3) Increases psychological safety. For starters, "Listen and don’t try to fix problems. Start with coaching sessions over lunch; eating together increases trust and is a natural way to schedule a one-on-one that isn’t focused on specific work tasks." (link)

With the first top 25 poll from the College Football Playoff selection committee due out tomorrow, The Athletic's Brown, a member of the AP Top 25 panel, takes readers "inside the mind of an AP Top 25 voter." Brown: "For as much as the importance of the AP poll is debated during the first half of the season, and for as often as it is assumed that it influences the selection committee, there is little to no evidence that the opinions of media voters make an impact on the actual rankings that the committee produces. The selection committee starts from scratch every week and has its own set of tools to form its rankings, and it has repeatedly shown that it does not cater to outside opinions. If anything, AP voters are likely to be influenced by the selection committee, rather than the other way around." Brown credits the CFP committee for better considering the bigger picture within a season and not being influenced by recent bias toward/against a particular team. More succinctly: "The CFP rankings are a tool used to determine postseason matchups and which teams get to play for the national championship. The AP poll is a historical record of how seasons started and finished, plus everything in between." Can you name the top-10 in the AP's first-ever poll, back in 1936? (link)
Oakland is reportedly negotiating with Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores' Platinum Equity to purchase The Palace of Auburn Hills. The Golden Grizzlies currently play their home games on campus at the O'rena where the largest crowd can only top 4,000. The Palace seating capacity exceeds 20K. A key factor for Auburn Hills is that the Palace contributed $828K in taxes to the city in 2017, but Oakland is a non-profit entity. Since the Pistons left for Little Caesars Arena the property value of The Palace has been cut nearly in half, but Mayor McDaniel thinks the university could provide other opportunities for the city. USA Today's Wolken with this week's misery index: 1) Miami (FL), who Wolken says has "taken a step backward this season"; 2) Southern California - "We’re about to see whether Lynn Swann is a real athletics director or just a figurehead for a faded brand whose ambition has been eroded by years of genuflection in its past glory"; 3) Missouri - "It's an unfortunate reality about college football, but some losses just count more than others," referring to the Tigers' last second loss to Kentucky; 4) Virginia Tech - points to HC Fuente's "inability to put together a top-20 recruiting class" thus far; and 5) Louisville - "If you’re not emotionally tied to this program, the complete and utter free fall on Bobby Petrino’s watch is kind of delicious. Not only is karma coming back to bite him (Wake Forest running back Matt Colburn, whose scholarship offer Petrino pulled at the last minute, ran for 243 yards in a 56-35 romp at Louisville on Saturday), but the Cardinals are the worst team in the ACC suddenly because of their offense, of all things." Trending toward misery are Washington, Wisconsin, TCU, Colorado and UNLV.  (link)
