Koehne's Corner
October 31st 2018

Have you ever been in a car accident or come close to being in one? Monday I was driving on Missouri Avenue on my way to Christ Lutheran when all of a sudden the van next to me slammed on its brakes and swerved into my lane. I hit my brakes as hard as I could and swerved. I am not sure how I didn’t hit him, but I missed him and ended up with two wheels on the street and two wheels on the sidewalk. The other remarkable part is that when I swerved over, there was a driveway for a business so I didn’t run into the curb. It turned out there was a car that had turned left in front of the van and cut him off which caused him to brake and come into my lane. Fortunately, the accident was avoided and after a couple of deep breaths we all started back up. I did have to drive with two wheels on the sidewalk for about 40 feet until the next driveway when I could get back fully on the road.

Unexpected things happen all the time. We can be driving along when all of a sudden we end up on the sidewalk. I guess the real question is how do we react when these things come along? John 16:33 is such an interesting verse. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” He tells us we will have trouble. That isn’t very comforting and not what we really want to hear, but sandwiched around this are two very comforting things. In Jesus we can have peace, and He has overcome the world. If you are not sure how to handle that difficult situation, you don’t have to look too far. Jesus is there and He can provide the peace we need, even when we get run off the road.
