October 2018  News & Updates

We are Worldwide!

First we want to give a big WELCOME to all of our new subscribers, and a THANK YOU to Mindful Schools for helping spread the word! In addition to a growing base across the USA, we now have educators in Israel, Croatia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia who have reached out to us about using the curriculum in the past weeks. Clearly there is a need for this work globally, and we are honored to be able to help.

For Parents

Our monthly mindful moment involves the simple practice of deep breathing, or as we like to call it, "Flower Breaths." Having children pretend to smell a flower and blow the petals reminds them to use their noses to inhale and mouths to exhale. Using a finger as a visual is not only fun, it's something kids can do anytime, anywhere! Try it with your child and let us know how it goes.

For Schools & Educators

Peace of Mind is sponsoring our first ever mini-conference in January, focused on Neuroscience and Young Children!  See the above graphic for more information. Tickets and more info will be available soon, but save the date and plan to join us now if you can!

There are many other wonderful groups supporting the work of mindfulness-based social and emotional learning with children, and we’d like to give a shout out to these organizations in particular that we’ve had the pleasure of working with recently: the National Education Association Foundation (NEAF) where Linda spoke earlier this month, the National Kids Yoga Conference (NKYC) held annually in Alexandria, VA, and the brand-new Coalition of Schools Educating Mindfully (COSEM) where we will be presenting several workshops at their upcoming conference Feb. 28-March 2. Click the logos below to find out more about these worthy organizations, and read more details on the Educating Mindfully Conference here. It's sure to be an amazing time!

Other News & Resources

We partnered with Mindful Schools this month to write a guest blog post where Linda discusses the importance of mindfulness and neuroscience in teaching about conflict resolution. Check out her article here, and if you haven't already visited the Mindful Schools website take a moment to look around. Their Mindfulness Fundamentals and Educator Essentials online courses are great places to get started - that's exactly what we did!

We welcome our newest area partner school, Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom PCSThey recently joined the eight other DC-area schools who are implementing the Peace of Mind program, and chose to bravely roll out with the entire school!  We are excited and honored to be a part of this huge undertaking with your children!

Our posters, journals, and online courses continue to be utilized as schools dive into the curriculum. If you have ideas for future resources you'd like to see, let us know! We're constantly working to keep content fresh and with the latest research in mind and working with our Peace of Mind home school, Lafayette Elementary, to deliver mindfulness-based social emotional lessons to over 800 students every week.
