How are you doing?

No, how are you really doing? I want to know.

My heart aches so, so much.

It's been a particularly tough few weeks for trans folks, bombs are being sent through the mail to our elected leaders, black people are being murdered with hate and intention at the grocery store, and then, the news that hit closest to home for me: the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh.

I've felt nauseous, scared, sad, exhausted, unsurprised, anxious, furious, lost, confused, defiant, strong, loving, and nothing.

I'm a proud, proud Jew. I've dedicated myself to creating a platform and community where anyone can explore Judaism in a relevant, inclusive way. I wear a Jewish star necklace daily. I embrace the Jewish tradition of mourning publicly, weeping openly, grieving in community, and, eventually, embracing life again. I will vote with a vengeance.

For now, my heart aches, but it also swells with gratitude and comfort and solidarity as I read the beautiful, insightful, powerful words of my fellow Jews and those who love us in my inbox, on social media, via text message.

An ally commented on one of my Facebook posts, "Your Jewish pride is beautiful to me. The joy of your culture inspires me as I grew up in Jewish communities. Judaism and Jewish culture remind me of home. I mourn with you unashamedly. Love and peace to you."

If you'd like to mourn unashamedly together, as a Jew or as a supporter, I'll create the brave space for that release.

Click here if you'd be interested in a conference call or video chat where we can unpack and express our feelings about the Pittsburgh shooting...and any/everything else that's making us feel all the feels (or feel numb) right now. You can come and listen, or you can share - either way, there will be room for you.

Stand with the Jewish community in Pittsburgh as they heal, and be with them in thoughts, prayers, and deeds.

Support the righteous work of welcoming strangers and protecting refugees, which the Pittsburgh shooter and terrorist so baselessly hates.

Stand up for common sense gun control in the United States, including an assault rifle ban.

Vote, and help everyone you know vote. It's as easy as sending a text message.

Stand in solidarity with Muslims, immigrants, people of color, and other communities targeted by violence to end hate crimes. Come together at your table and celebrate diversity and unity.

A massacre in the heart of Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. These are the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. Remembering the Tree of Life synagogue victims. Why the Tree of Life shooter was fixated on the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. As the Pittsburgh Jewish community reeled, its teenagers mobilized. A story that the Jews tell each other. I grew up in a place where I felt safe from anti-Semitism - it was the United States. Trump's caravan hysteria led to this. Anti-Semitism is no longer an undertone of Trump’s campaign; it’s the melody. President Trump, you are not welcome in Pittsburgh. Leave us the fuck alone. A prayer for Squirrel Hill and American Jewry. After Pittsburgh, the interfaith response sends message of solidarity across the religious divide. We need to stand up for each other.
