Worlds Overview
The Sydney Etchells Fleet has once again shown why it is the leading One Design keelboat fleet in Australia with Martin Hill and his crew of Julian Plante, Matt Belcher and Sean O’Rourke winning the 2018 World Championship on Moreton Bay on Saturday and leading the 15 boat Sydney Fleet contingent in producing strong results across the board.
Congratulations go to Martin who, since coming to Etchells a few years ago, has turned in some fantastic results and now joins Tom King (2012), Colin Beashel (1993 & 1995) and Iain Murray (1984) as an Etchells World Champion from our fleet (past and present). The 2018 Worlds Fleet was particularly strong with 7 past World Champions competing. Martin’s consistency, achieving a sixth place or better in 7 of 9 races in a 94 boat fleet, was remarkable. In addition to Martin returning the 'Founders Cup' to Sydney, he was also the Senior and Masters Champion.

There were many more fantastic performances from our members: Tom King, above, secured the Corinthian title and the Queensland championship / Pre-Worlds regatta. Jeanne-Claude Strong, below, was awarded the Female Skipper title. Sydney Fleet boats also won 4 of the 9 races with wins to Iain Murray (race 1), Billy Merrington (race 3), JC Strong (race 4) and Martin Hill (race 8).
